WAP gone missing?

Hi all,
I have just been given an old D-Link DWL-900AP+ access point which i have been trying to set up by connecting straight into my computer via a crossover cable (there are reasons why i am doing it this way).
The LAN led on the D-Link is lit and my Wii can access the D-link (not internet as it is not connected at this time) but.... i cannot access the D-link via my computer. I type in 192.168.0.50 yet nothing. I have done a hardware reset and again, no good.
I know i should be connecting the unit through a router which i do have but i am just trying something out at this atage and although there is comminication between my computer and and the D-Link WAP i cannot access the unit to say change security settings etc.

Help please..
