Default weird arp problem

Got a problem that i've had for some time, asked many people and no one seems to be able to figure it out... so heres a go at the wireless gurus...

@@@ PROBLEM @@@
-Lots of packet loss to AP, works fine for 50+ pings, then looses 10-30, then fine again
[client a] -- [ap] -- [client b]

[client a] can ping [client b] with no problems, even though this goes via the ap (the 2 clients can't see eachother because of a large hill between, thats the reason for the [ap].

@@@ TROUBLE SHOOTING @@@
pings to ap
--- ap ping statistics ---
100 packets transmitted, 98 packets received, 2% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 4.5/5.9/14.0 ms

--- ap ping statistics ---
1050 packets transmitted, 397 packets received, 62% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 4.5/6.2/16.2 ms

--- ap ping statistics ---
342 packets transmitted, 211 packets received, 38% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 4.5/5.9/16.3 ms

pings to clientb from client a are consistent with hardly any loss.
--- clientb ping statistics ---
282 packets transmitted, 277 packets received, 1% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 4.5/9.1/19.2 ms

19:08:55.199874 clienta> ap: icmp: echo request (DF)
19:08:56.199879 clienta> ap: icmp: echo request (DF)
19:08:57.199869 clienta> ap: icmp: echo request (DF)
19:08:58.199879 clienta> ap: icmp: echo request (DF)
19:08:59.199865 clienta> ap: icmp: echo request (DF)
19:09:00.199884 clienta> ap: icmp: echo request (DF)
19:09:01.199541 arp who-has ap tell ap
19:09:01.200283 ap > ap: icmp: echo request (DF)
19:09:01.203320 arp reply ap is-at 0:60:1d:f7:a:41
19:09:01.205084 ap > ap: icmp: echo reply
19:09:02.200127 clienta> ap: icmp: echo request (DF)
19:09:02.204275 ap > clienta: icmp: echo reply

As shown in this tcpdump, we have lots of icmp echo requests, but no replys, as soon as we get the arp, everything works fine. This seems to be the case every time when i loose pings for 20-30 packets, when it adds the arp, things come right.

I have added a static arp to the ap, however this didn't help the situation.
On the client a, I have tried adding a static arp, however was not 100% sure on how to do this so tried every way possible, some stopped traffic completely, the rest the problem remained.

nad:~# arp -a
hiv.nad-node.albanywireless.co.nz (10.23.19.180) at 00:50:FC:F2:94:3E [ether] on wlan1
ap (210.55.xx.xx) at 00:60:1D:F7:0A:41 [ether] on wlan0
? (10.23.15.4) at 00:02:6F:08:26:A4 [ether] on wlan0
? (10.23.15.2) at 00:02:6F:08:36:9C [ether] on wlan0

arp -s arpip 00:60:1D:F7:0A:41
arp -s arpip 00:60:1D:F7:0A:41 pub

None of this works, any assistance would be appreciated

Thanks
Barry

Hi

What hardware are you using?
What antennas are you using?
Whats your signal strength like?

Are there any objects that could be causing interferance with the signal close by?

Look on the bright side at least you are getting a signal

Excuse me, but the way you are putting it, it sounds like you are trying to tell me that one computer has a WIRED lan card and the other a WIRELESS lan card.. is this true?? both computers must have either wireless or wired, not one of each. wired relies on cables and is not able to work with a wireless card on the other end...

Also, i have a Senao SL-2511EXT2+, which was hopeless under windows, so i use linux, and those ICs do get hot, its normal...

Have you got an AP?? you will need to put them in Ad-Hoc mode if you don't, and make sure the ESSIDs match, if they dont, then no connect (this is assuming you have wireless cards)

ok first of all to icepick
- Try making the ap on the hill a repeater and set one of the machines up as a ap

now for yusi
- ok if you think the Lan side of things in your ap are broken then send it back for a replacement to whoever you got it from.
But first make shure:
+That the fault isnt the network cable
+The lan card in the computer is not bung
+That you have the drivers for the lan card installed
+That you have power to the ap
+That you have protocols installed in the computer for the network

and for the last person.
-this also applys for yusi try finding a reset button on your routers and pressing it but only after trying every thing else.
-check your cable is in the femail socket properly.

It would help if you supplied a list of things that you have checked in trying to solve the proble.

Yusi

If you think its the AP that has died then send it back. I suggest that you get incontact with your supplier(who you bought it off) and then either get them to replace the current model or change to a different model.

I try to stay local with my suppliers (The country that I live in), that way their is less hastel if something goes wrong with the product.

Good luck
