Default Wireless DNS thingy

Hi there,
I want to set up a PC with a wireless card with freeware and public domain software.
I want to set up dns so that every name OR ip (except local subnet) will resolve to the pc.
Idea being that a user connects to my AP, and then when they open their browser or an ftp client, their default connection will open my ftp or web site.

Whats the easiest way to do this?, I have spare licences for XP pro and windows 2000 server.

Any ideas?

I did this with iptables on linux a while back, but I can't remember how to do it

Maybe you can use a proxy or something?

John,

iptables should be able to do that, I was using it for both a transparent proxy and to redirect a pile of ports. Also i managed to set it up ro that only certin IP ranges were redirected when they tried to surf the net.

Have you done it in windows?
I think its two separate issues, all dns requests resolving to a single IP and then any IP addresses outside the local subnet being redirected to the single IP too?
I'm assuming that win2000 server can do it, just not too sure where to look.
It just seems like the best bet for a wireless sharing hub.

John,

Im not sure if it will work the same on a windows box, however heres an idea if you really want to use windows rather than debian or linux.

Install VMWare virtual machine and run a linux shell on the windows box, then link the interfaces over to the windows side that has the FTP server.
Ok i did not say it was a great idea

I am using Netgear WG-102 as it has a setting to redirect a URL or a ip address to a web site.

As long as you are not stuck on windows,
I use ZoneCD from www.publicip.net
It requires the use of a dedicated PC, it runs a derivative of Morphix Linux.
Runs directly from the CD, no harddrive needed (I use a PII 400)
With this you can use the pre-built logons or create your own.
I have a free net set up in Papatoetoe, when users log on they get a splash screen and then redirect to my web site before being allowed to surf the net etc.

What about using monowall and turn on the captive portal then stick a bit of code in there to redirect to your website or accounts page.

Windows 2000 Server would do the trick. You would need to set your wifi router to foward all dns queries to your computer IP address (Thats simple enough).

You will also need IIS installed. Go into computer management and click the IIS webfolder file and go to its properties then click the home directory tab and set the site you want viewers to go to in there.

I cant remember off the top of my head how to set up the DSN on W2000Server, but im sure there are help me's on the net some were.

Hope that helps
