Default WPA/WPE Encription crashes router when selected

Hello

Please help I have a Zoom X6 router, the firmware is installed correctly and is up to date, my windows XP Home, is upto date and supports WPA encripton.

When i select WPA or WPE (infact any of the settings!) the router boots me out saying "page cannot be displayed" the wirless goes offline and i have to do a hard boot from my router to get it back again! Its not my PC because i tried through my IBook too, same problem....

The router itself works fine, and I can access the net no probs. However it just wont let me enable security!?!?
I have read the manuals both for my router and windows XP, so im not overlooking anything.
My router should drop down passphase boxes, once an option is selected... but it just crashes!!

Called tech support, they basicaly read the manual over the phone to you.

Im completly stumped! any ideas?!?

Many thanks

-seb

When you say crashes, can you not see the router at all? If you go to windows wireless config can you not see your router or does it appear, but with a padlock on it?

I can't say I've used any Zoom gear. Maybe the firmware is faulty and they haven't released a fix? Are there other Zoom users with the same problem?

thanks for your response,

The routers admin page, locks me out instantly when i select WPA or WPE. Then the little icon on my taskbar gets a little "X" near it... basically no wireless detected (anymore!). when i scan for wireles networks, it cant pick it up. Only will it find it again when i do a hard boot with the router.

I cant find any soloutions on the net,or the manufacturers site. infact for a router thats relatively expensive, hardly anyone has one, and theres no support! I think its time to change router!? But is very annoying as i know it can support WPA and can see exactly how to achieve it... simply keeps crashing on me when i try!
The router itself, when using the net works no probs without security.

I'd be looking at getting a new router to be honest! A design like that sounds very flaky and you could expect more problems down the track. Unsecure networks are a ticking time bomb; someone will most likely have a go at it some time.

If it's still covered by warranty take it back to the store; it should be considered faulty if such an important feature does not work.

yeah, well looks like i'll have to flogg it on ebay, beware Zoom people, they are crap. Tech support is just a guy reading you the manual that came with it!
Quote "theres no advice in the manual to cover this, sorry sir". Any suggestions on a decent router, with plenty of support etc

Lots of people use dlink?

I'd suggest Linksys (such as the ever popular and almost bulletproof WRT54G) or D-Link.

You CANNOT update any wireless settings with a wireless computer, ESPECIALLY not the encryption settings. To update it you must be connected to the router via an ethernet cable. I had this same problem, I solved it by connecting to it with a lan cable.

The second you change the encryption your computer will not be able to find it because it can't communicate with it (it's used to using no encryption and now the router is requiring an encryption)

Go pick-up a cheap ethernet cable directly connect your laptop and change the settings (actually I think an ethernet cable COMES WITH the X6, it did with mine.)

Also make sure you have the 2.0.3 firmware It's much cooler

I gave recently bought the x6 and have exactly the same problem. The only way of retaining a connection after setting the security is to keep the Ethernet cable connected. Not exactly the ideal situation for a wireless router!!

Before entering any settings the wireless function works fine so I now there is nothing essentially wrong with the connection or the wireless dongle I’m using (at least I don’t think). When I open the admin screen I can set the security and change all the advanced access settings to the passcode I’ve chosen (I have tried defaulting to the automatic options). However, when I remove the Ethernet cable and connect, it connects to the modem, tells me the signal strength is excellent but returns page cannot be displayed with every search.

If anyone has come across a fix, would be grateful as I can’t afford another modem and look like I’m going to be wired for as long as…..

P.s I have the most up to date firmware.
