6 months ago, I ordered and received a Sim Zero pack from 3. I am a
complete novice in the world of mobile phones and cannot now remember
why I placed this order - and why I ordered, at the same time a payg
sim pack. I can see no reference to the Sim Zero on the 3 website, so
thought I might as here, before contacting 3, about the present status
of the Sim Zero - is it worthwhile opening the pack and installing the
sim? I use the phone (a Hero) only to connect to the internet, not at
all for texts and calls, and the original payg from 3 does well for
that.
Would be grateful for any info and advice.

Free Voicemail, Full diverts, Full roaming, Free online Itemised Billing,
Free Skype.
Handy for roaming
A ringfenced 3 PAYG Sim on 3pay would be better for cheap data
(£5 per month, 2Gb d/l)

Thanks for this. It must have been the roaming and the Skype that
originally interested me. I shall have a ponder.

3 SIM Zero is contract SIM without any of the hassle of remembering to top
up. For nothing a month, 3 SIM Zero gives you free Skype-to-Skype calls,
free Windows Live Messenger and free voicemail.
You have free Skype on your 3 PAYG SIM too

Thanks for this, which filled in the gaps which still remained. Ihave
been going across to France on short regular trips, and was trying to
find a seamless, affordable way of staying in touch and connected.
As I could find no reference to Sim Zero on 3's website, I thought it
may have been superseded. As it stands, I shall pop in the sim and
give it a trial.

As you, I have both 3 PAY SIM, that I use as my main phone number in UK and
3 SIM Zero. I take 3 SIM zero with me for trips abroad so that I do not
have to worry about running out of credit just in case I needed to make a
long unexpected call. Bear in mind that Skype on 3 is free only in UK in
either case. For 3 SIM Zero you must have agreed to pay by DD at the time of
getting it.
Info on 3 SIM Zero is not easy to find but it is here: http://threestore.three.co.uk/sim/

Splendid - really am most grateful. On one trip, when a problem arose,
I found the phone battery running low and the credit running lower,
hence the interest in having a backup device.
Think I've got it sorted out now. And thanks for the link. Websites
have always been a source of confusion to me - sort of initiative
test.
Thanks again,

A potential benefit not yet mentioned is the use of a Zero SIM in an old
3G handest (NEC e313, anybody?) for "glovebox" purposes or similar. Unlike
most PAYG SIMS it won't expire and take remaining credit with it.
Given the "free Skype for ever" and similar puff, I suppose that 3 PAYG
SIMS wouldn't expire but wouldn't care to rely on that assumption.

Make sure PIN is on, you wouldn't want someone to nick a contract phone

Another contender is a Virgin PAYG sim with Direct Debit added
converting it into a Zero per month contract.
Virgin Mobile may have better roaming agreements in some
countries than Three
I keep a ringfenced Orange OVP Virgin sim for roaming.
Orange OVP Virgin has alternative methods of payment such as
by cash at Orange shops
Three Zero and Virgin Mobile + DD have to be paid by DD

Yes, I had been thinking along the lines of jonphred's suggestion...
and the issue of security has brought on a bit of head scratching.
Have decided to find a phone suitable for being a backup device, pop
in the sim, pick a pin and, as I am now well into my 77th year, live
dangerously... why not...

Now this does stir my curiosity. These days I roam no further than
Cornwall and Brittany, where I am picked up by Bytel or Orange, which
is the major player there, of course.
Shall enquire further.. trip to Plymouth and pop in the shops..
...all these excitements...

Yes, but you should make sure it is PIN and Lock protected, so that no one

In the light of the cautions offered by yourself and by Steve Terry,
She Who Must Be Obeyed has expressed reservations about the whole
enterprise. She has a presentiment of loss, followed by an IMF
bailout. It is, apparently, an excitement too far. Put simply, I am
not allowed.

But what will SWMBO say if one day you need an emergency phone
in the glove box, and you don't have one cos you listened to her?
A contract phone is perfectly secure if switched off, with Pin on.
(as long as you can remember what the 4 digits are to use it)

After due deliberation, I submitted your suggestion for consideration
by Higher Authority.
I was promptly informed that it would all be my fault.
Also, I was reminded of being observed querying this chap in the
mirror, "Now, who did you say I was, again?"
4 digits may seem a trifle to some people, but... well...
but I do have a little notebook.. somewhere.. I call it 'the
pincushion'.. haven't seen it for a while, though..

disuse disconnection period
You could use a PAYG sim and set a reminder in something
like Google calendar which sends a free SMS as well as email.
At a reminder date / time of every 5 months to remind you to
make a chargeable call.
A T Mobile or Orange Sim with everything everywhere roaming
activated will probably give you the best UK coverage
Even better would be a foreign sim with manual UK roaming

Yes, I have been contemplating this last option.. we're nipping across
this weekend, for a few days.. guess Orange would be likeliest to do
a suitable sim.
Shall see what's on offer.. if there's nothing 'suitable', it's back
to the original plan.. hand on heart I can say "I tried"...
