Default 3G Mobile as a bluetooth modem

Just wanting some advice on this subject - apologies if this is the wrong
place...

Thinking about getting a 3G mobile and using it as a bluetooth modem to let
my PocketPC (Dell Axim x51v) or laptop (haven't bought it yet!) connect to
the web wherever I may be. Any useful advice, pointers, experience etc.
would be very welcome...

Cheers!

Not complicated, in fact it's not really a factor in your purchase since
any 3G and bluetooth equipped phone can do it.

You could get an HSDPA enabled phone (I use a Samsung SGH-Z560 on
Web'n'Walk Plus @ £12.50 plus just £5.00 (retentions gave me that rate
for ufix as I didn't want a new phone) and get an even faster
connection - later HSDPA phones may be even faster.

Alternatively, both Voda and T-Mobile do usb modems now.

i got my Z560 (without a charger) off ebay for just £46 - it was sold
as faulty as 'it buzzed all the time' - once it was plugged into the
laptop it soon charged the phone and the buzzing stopped!

Yes.

Dial number is *99#, username and password is network-specific,
shouldn't be anymore complicated than that. Most phones come with PC
software which does the dialling for you now.

If you say so, thats not my experience. I think the ease of this bit is
down the bluetooth stack you have on the PC. The widcomm stack is
excellent for this for example, the microsoft one is bollocks.

The phone comes with a suite of software (un-imaginatively entitled PC
suite). One application of this suite is a modem wizard thing. You dont
need to muck about, just hook it up and press "connect to internet".

OK that's slightly simplified, but why not download the PC Suite for
yourself from nokia.com (it's free) and see for yourself?

I don't know much about Windows, but I've had good luck making Unix
systems talk to just about all the phones I've tried (in addition
to a Novatel Expresscard and a Novatel USB card) by identifying
them to the kernel as standard USB serial ports which you indeed
can type AT commands at. This seems to be the standard way these
are set up to work.

Yes I've had some success with that too. The biggest problem I've had
with GPRS under Linux is that phones often have a broken ppp
implementation and various options have to be turned off before it will
work.

Bluetooth under Linux and Windows (i.e. same phone on 2 OSes) is a non
starter though but that's down to the specs.

Steve.
