UIVMM you won't be able to.... Orange 3G only works if you have a
"USIM", which you're unlikely to have if the previous phone was not
3G.
AFAIK, for contract users, they only give you a USIM if you upgrade to
a 3G phone with Orange.
You could try asking them, but you may have to upgrade to the cheapest
3G handset they have to get an appropriate SIM card.

You can't. The only way is to purchase or upgrade to a 3G phone
"properly".

Arghh, I have been calling customer services to get 3g enabled on my HTC
TYTN II, after getting nowhere I had decided to drop in on the nearest
Orange shop, 40 miles away, to sort it out.
If I took in a different 3g handset, Orange branded, and my PAYG sim would
they then give/sell me a 3g sim?

To enable 3G on a contract account, you need to upgrade to a 3G device
via Orange. Unfortunately, waving an Orange 3G device at staff isn't
sufficient.
I really, really cannot understand why Orange do this. My 20 month old
T-Mobile SIM supplied with a 2G device had 3G (and now HSDPA) enabled on
it out the box.
All I can see Orange doing is annoying the customers who purchase SIM
free handsets, who actually may save Orange money by not subsidising new
handsets to them!

Exactly, I have the device, it works on Orange 3g with another sim I have,
there should be no problem. So I now have to move from Orange to another
network just because I bought my own device and don't want to buy a second
phone.

They want customers off "ringfenced" tariffs like OVP VM.

I think they would rather charge you a bit/lot more for their version of the
same handset
BTW
I called O2 a few months ago expecting to pay for a sim card to access 3G
speeds on a Data tariff I have.
A new sim card arrived the next day with an invoice for £0.00p.

You can get 3G PAYG SIMs for free, you dont need to prove anything you
just need to ask for one.
If you are on pay monthly you can forget it.

Although 3G data charges on those tariffs are usually quite high, and
are unable to add text bundles (at least, that's what I got when I tried
to do it online), so I guess also unable to add data bundles.

Which seems a completely bizarre situation. Why penalise pay monthly
customers who want to buy their own handsets when PAYG customers can do
that. Surely, the subsidy on the pay monthly handset costs them money.
The only thing I can think of is that they want to tie people into a
longer contract - but with them being the only network who do this for
3G pay monthly customers, I'm sure a number may switch because of this
(and take up 'free' handset offers).

3G data is no more expensive than 2G data.

You can add data bundles. I've got the old Orange World 4 on my ED50
line, and within the past 2 months I put the OW Daily Capped option on my
OVP VM line.
So far I've only hammered the daily capped line hard once. I'll see how
well it worked when the bill comes through...
