Default Advice on 3 store Broadband Plus (3GB) wifi internet access

Appreciate any advice on this plan from 3 from anyone using either the 1 or
the 3gb plan.

I use broadband on a 12gb plan and tend not to do more than 1 - 2gb per
month and so a 1 gb plan would be fine I would need to keep track on their
usage meter web page I'm assuming 3 would have one if I accepted there plan.

I would be primarily using it within London and would like to know if it is
covered well and with a speed comparible to a dial up or better I know the
spec states a download of ~ 3mb ( max ) more than acceptable for my needs
of general browsing, mail, and chat.

For 10 pound per month + 50 pound for the usb it sounds quite a good deal
based on a 12 month contract.

Again seeking advice of anyone using this plan

Thanks in advance Sammy

Ps found out a little more and it seems vodafone offer a similar scheme with
a faster speed though possible not the same coverage as 3.

On coverage I cannot seem to find much details on there coverage I'm
assuming there coverage is blanket, by blanket I mean I can use it in my own
home with laptop I'm assuming it uses the protocol hsdpa ( bit like
attaching mobile to pc but much faster ie can use anywhere within reach of
base station ) and not wireless eg got to be within reach of macdonalds or
starbuk

Intending to drop my current broadband plan and use 3 g web access plan

Ps sorry if I'm not using the correct News etiquette and probable cannot
spell :-)

Experiences of 3 broadband seem mixed. I tried it for a day in
Edinburgh and dumped it, as the data rates achieved were dreadful,
whatever the connection speed. A friend's partner who signed up for a
year reports the same. Others, elsewhere, have said that it's pretty
good. So I'd say "try it where you are", definitely.

As for deals ...

If you are an existing customer you can get the contract deals half
price (so £7.50 over 18 months, modem free) and the modem is only £20
on PAYG. Big advantage of PAYG is that you don't get clobbered by that
£100/GB if you run over - it just stops working.

I went for T-Mobile intead: £15/month for two years, free modem,
unlimited T-Mobile WiFi access, 300 minutes/month BT Openzone. And so
far, it's worked very well indeed.

Ian,

Thanks for update I'm actually in Aus and finding out for someone moved back
and renting in London ( not always dsl/broadband available )
ps rates in aus are more than 5 times higher than uk rates on both hsdpa
usb and the plan on even the slowest plan !!! so much the lucky country.

q1
Anyway you say T has 300 mins/month, I know it sounds obvious but could you
confirm thats a time plan eg use more than 300 mins and you will be charged
more ( I'm taking it usage is unlimted within reason on this plan ) ?

q2
Do you mean T-Mobile the company uses BT Openzone, I'm making a very bold
guess BT Open is BTs hspda nw but not sure ?

anyone using 3 hspdpa in london :-(

Sorry, I was a bit unclear. What you get with the T-Mobile deal is

1) Unlimited use of their network of WiFi hotspots (Starbucks!)

2) 300 minutes / month use of BT Openzone WiFi hotspots - after that
it's £1/10 minutes

3) "Unlimited" mobile broadband, though if you exceed 3G in a month
they'll tut-tut at you, do it again and they'll throttle you. But they
won't, unlike 3, charge you more.

See above, and www.btopenzone.com

I would strongly recomend against trying to use mobile broadband as
your home service. I don't think any of the networks are anywhere
close to the abilities of wired (ADSL or cable) providers, and wired
broadband is cheap here - ten or fifteen quid a month ill get you
8Mbps, lots of GB.

One word of warning. If you go above your plan on a mobile data tariff
you'll pay a high price. I think it may be worse on Vodafone but '3'
charge 10p/MB afaik, that makes 1GB overage to be £100 !
It is sometimes best to PAYG if the tariff fits what you want, that
way you just get cut off when you reach your desired limit.

Not on T-Mobile. They may slow down your link if you exceed their fair
use limit (3G two months in a row, but you don't get charged more.
