I just got a call on my landline from a company called Alphacom who seemed
to know that my wife has an Orange PAYG mobile and were offering her
a contract with them and she can keep the same phone number.
When I asked what the connection between Orange and Alphacom
was he avoided giving me an answer, he just said "we are the dealers"

Dialled the number, get a automated voice saying "Thanks for calling,a
representative will be with you shortly" Then a pakki sounding woman answers
"Hello, Hello"
I would have thought that if they we're a legit company, they would answer
"Hello, "Alphacom, how can I help" or something.

I am guessing maybe information was sold, There was a channel 4 program on
this a month or so ago, where indian call centers would often sell detailed
lists of qualified leads to other companies. What was more worrying was as
well as just the telephone numbers and related information useful for
telesales, bank and credit card details were also sold.
of course it is also posssible they just call numbers at random and guess
customers are still on orange by the dialing code

Nice to see you add racism to your already long list of charming
attributes, Jason Drake.

Whilst saying "pakki sounding" may well be derogatory, I fail to see how it
can be classed as racist?
Would you have said the same if the poster had said "a
scouse/geordie/cockney sounding woman"?
Not defending, just sick of political correctness taken too far.

I had a similar call from someone asking about my 02 contract. Except
I'm with Orange now and have never had an O2 contract although I was
with Cellnet many years ago. I made a similar assumption that they'd
taken the number and just guessed I was still with O2.

My wife hasbeen receiving these calls every weekday evening for over 2
months - she gets one, explains that she isn't interested and then
asshe goes to ask them to remove her details, they hang up. 30 mins
later, they call again, and as soon as she starts to say she's not
interested they hang up again.
I have tried calling the CLID no. , even waited to get through to an
operator who at first tries to sell me a contract, then as soon as they
realise I'm not interested they start talking in a foreign language
(can't profess to know which but it is an indian sound dialect) and
then they hang up. We registered on TPS but they say they can't help
because Alphacom deny all knowledge
