I signed up last week to T-Mobile with WnW on a N95 (leaving O2 in the
process).
Despite using the coverage checker and being assured of good 2g coverage
in my place of work (Over Peover in Cheshire) I cannot get any signal at
all. I am going to use the 14 day opt-out to return the phone and cancel
the contract.
The contract I was on gave me £180 of call credit and the WnW plus for
£42.50 per month.
Is there an alternate deal that would give me a similar service with
another provider?

Hi Mr Drunk,
I went through the same thing this week but actually the reverse. I took a
contract with O2 to find their data charges were horrendous (£5 for 4mb) -
something I should have checked first. So today I cancelled and went with
T-Mobile on the web and walk package.
As far as I can see, there is no equal reasonable alternative to the
'unlimited' web and walk. O2 do have bigger data plans available but only
the 35mb one for home users I think. Bigger than that and you have to be
business user.
Vodaphone are not that much better for pricing, although their Vodaphone
walled portal is free to use, so if you just wanted it for checking news and
sports you would be okay. Having said that I have not looked at their
packages recently as to what 'non-walled' data options they have.

I've been having a snoop round this morning and there really isn't
anything to compare is there?
I am almost tempted to upgrade to their Max data plan and run voip on
the phone, setting the mobile up to forward to my voip number if not
answered (I can see several AP's at work).

I suppose that is an option. I think the theoretical limit on the max is
10Gb a month. I doubt you would use that much for calls?
It is after all only at work where there is a problem? How is the signal
at home?
Thing is if you upgrade you will still be under the 14 day cancel anyway, so
if you are not happy with it then thats not a problem. It will at least
give you a chance to check the voip quality.

Brilliant - been playing all weekend.

I really want to stay with T-Mobile. My bill will drop from well over
£100 per month to 42.50 but obviously I need to be in touch. Another
alternative is to just use voip on my lappy (after forwarding the calls
to there) and using the phone as a bluetooth headset.
sorry if this is dumb question but do you only need 2G access for web'n'walk
and not 3G?

Well now the answer is clear. If your bill reduces by over £100 a month
then even at the more expensive package you are saving a lot of money.
The laptop is an option, but then you dont wanna be carrying that around
with you all the time?
Tough choices but if I were able to afford it I would do it as a round about
option.
BTW what phone did you get? I just got the MDA Vario PDA phone, it came
included.

Web n walk works with normal gprs too. Its a little slow, but not painfully
slow.

It is not really an issue - at work I have my laptop on but elsewhere I
have a signal.

I got the N95 - built in gps and a very nice camera.

Ah another ugvm friend got that phone the other day. He also said its very
nice indeed. He had a problem with the sky router and wifi but sorted it
now I think.
W'n'w is both 2G and 3G (with HSDPA on W'n'W max I believe).
However, in the OP's situation, I suspect that what he actually means is
that T-Mobile said he'd get 2G only coverage at his work (ie. he won't
get 3G) when in fact, he can't get 2G or 3G.
I could be wrong, but usually the 2G signal is better than the 3G - so
not having even 2G tends to be a problem.

That is correct - I can live without 3g at work but being able to
take/make calls is pretty much a definitive requirement ;-)

How about Three's X-Series? It's not quite umlimited Internet but might just
about do.
You can talk to James Sutherland for more details.

Also worth noting is that X-Series has now replaced 3's basic 'Internet 30'
add-on and can be added to any 3 Handset - not just the specific X-Series
ones. This is just 'basic' X-Series though, which for £5 a month gives just
the unlimited data (1GB fair use - seemingly not strictly enforced), but not
the extra applications in X-Series Silver and Gold. Three's website doesn't
seem to have been fully updated with it all yet - but you can get to some of
the deals via this page:

I don't have an HSPDA handset but I believe HSPDA is supported on all
WnW but with the "no modems" restriction on the basic WnW that limits
things a bit.

If you phone up CS to ask for HSDPA they'll say you can't get it on the
standard W'n'W server, needs to be Pro etc to get that. That's
certainly the response from the many Modaco/Mobiholics discussions about it.

Just as an aside, I quite like the web and walk service. I used a bit of it
last night. Its a little on the slow side but not painfully slow.
Certainly very usable. I would imagine that the speed may vary from place
to place depending on the mast used or something?
