Background e-mail on BENQ EL71?

I've been unable to find information on this online yet:

Does anyone know if the BENQ EL71 e-mail (which allows access via POP3
or IMAP) will run and poll in the
background? (The PDF manual available on the website makes no allusion
to this).

If anyone has information on the phone's ability to syncronize either
via SyncML or via MS Active Sync, this would also be much appreciated.

Having learned more:
- The phone does support POP3 / IMAP but doesn't appear to support
background polling.
- The phone does support SyncML for calendar, address book, etc.
synching, however also doesn't do this automatically.
