Is the Orange M3100 the same as the T-Mobile Vario II? The O2 XDA Mini
S is the previous version, though, right (equivalent to the Orange
M3000 which wasn't released in the UK)?

The M3100, the Vario II, the O2 XDA Trion and the Vodafone Qtek HTC are
all brand names for the HTC Hermes. The XDA Mini S is a brand name for
the HTC Wizard, which is also branded as the Orange M3000 and the
T-Mobile MDA Vario.

To further complicate matters, there are 2 versions of the HTC Hermes,
but these are just cosmetic differences to do with button
shapes/locations etc.

btw - anyone know whether there's yet a VOIP client for this particular
handset? And specifically, one that would work over Wifi through (for
example) a home network?

Haven't received it yet - only ordered it yesterday afternoon ;-)
I did quite a bit of research before ordering, though: the general
consensus among reviewers was that the Wizard/Vario I was a great
handheld computer but a lousy phone, and that the Hermes/Vario II
addresses most of the Wizard's phone shortcomings. I'll happily let you
know what I think of it when it arrives...

Not sure. It's worth noting, as you may already have done, that Web &
Walk explicitly bars VOIP from your unlimited web access (obviously
this doen't affect local WLANs).

er..... yeah, just like that... ;c) Being able to run it over WiFi
would be a huge bonus though, as otherwise it kind of negates the value
of VoIP (free interweb access on T-mobile excludes VoIP, as John B just
said).

I like mine - the only thing I'd change is the O.S. - I much prefer Symbian to
Windows Mobile. But it's a great handset - and there's nothing "wrong" with
Windows Mobile as such, it's just a bit, er, clunky.

Yeah, Skype supports only doing it over WiFi and not using your GPRS
connection.

That wasn't very clear. Skype has an option to allow you to only use
WiFi for VoIP if you wish and it will never do it over GPRS (you can
also choose to use WiFi and GPRS if you wish).
New question now - is there an unlock solution for the various versions
of the HTC Hermes? Is it as simple as a firmware flash, or something
that the handset needs to be sent off for?
