PS - I don't want a fancy phone. B+W screen and good texting
facilities is all I really need. I don't need to display pictures or
take photos or play games on the thing. Good battery life is desirable
though.

Nokia 1600 @ £19.99 from any Orange Shop. Calls 15p/min, SMS 10p, with
bundles available if you are a regular or heavy texter.

True enough, I suggested that one as the OP had stated that he was familiar
with the virgin tarrif. If virgin is not suitable, the same handset is
available SIM-free from expansys for 32 quid, which could then be used with
any network's PAYG SIM.

I agree with Jim. Don't go for the cheapest start-up deal. Look at the
tariff. I'd go for T-mobile and top up with £20. That way you get 20%
more credit added for free. Flat rate for landline/mobile calls 12p.
For the phone, well, if you can get a T-mobile one then do, otherwise
get one that you know you can easily unlock so that it can be used on
T-mobile. T-Mobile SIMs are 50p, post free (or sometimes all free)
from their web site.

Orange have a couple of phones for £9.99 in their online shop for which
you could get the same tariff. Be warned that 08** numbers are very
pricy (esp 0871) though.

If your use is mainly off-peak, you'd struggle to beat Vodafone - 10p/min capped at
30p per call up to an hour (you need to sign up to Stop The Clock - it's free).
But they are expensive peak, so if you're going to use it a lot during weekday
daytime (7:30-19:30) forget it.
