Default Which are the best VOIP capable mobiles?

Hi,

My current contract with Orange has run out so I can use any provider/mobile
etc.

I have currently set up an Asterisk VOIP server as a test and will
definitely be setting up a permanent VOIP server with a internet IP
address.

What I would like is to have a mobile phone which can connect to the VOIP
server via Wifi and the internet and which uses the server to make/receive
calls.

This would be handy in the office for workers who are only occasionally in
the office. Where it would be really useful would be for when people are
working from home and can connect to the VOIP server via the home Wifi and
the internet.

My requirement is for a model of phone which does this easily and cleanly -
and initially I need two phones with more needed soon.

If the phone does nothing else but work well as a VOIP phone over Wifi then
this would be fine.

If there are any Brucie bonuses what I would like is:

* Business type tariff like Orange's whereby minutes are shared between
several handsets.
* 3G so that the phone can be used as a decent modem for laptops.
* Would prefer to avoid using 3rd party software.

Thanks,

Kevin Bailey

Any of the current crop of microsoft/HTS devices would seem to fit the
bill. Orange call them SPV's.

Nokia N95 but not from 3 as they remove the VOIP client. The Nokia E65 has
wifi but you may need to add a VOIP client to it.

Am I right in thinking that O2 do not remove the VOIP client?

Do these phones have the SIP VOIP client software on them?

Cheers,

Kevin

I think you are wrong. 3 do not remove the VOIP client, it is Orange and
Vodafone who do that.

Thanks for that - and have you been able to get the N95 to connect as a SIP
client?

Would be great to know if someone has - cos then I can go and look at 3's
tariff's.

Cheers,

Kevin

A friend who has an N95 recently installed Truphone on it.

In fact on 3's X-Series you can use (or they do not seem to stop it, nor
bill for it) the data signal for VOIP. Means you can use Fring's SIP
function or Truphone on the 3G data signal as well as wifi. I have an N95 on
3 (not a 3 branded one), and have used both on it.

I can recommend the E61 and the E61i. Pretty decent voip client.

Make sure you don't get one with the Hacked T-Mobile firmware on it.
They have seriously buggered up the E61i's voip-ness. It's also not
possible to flash this one to the standard nokia firmware.

S.
