Best/worst mobile services in UK? Visiting UK in a couple of months.

I'll be visiting the UK for about a month over November-December and
was thinking that I might just buy a simple cheap prepaid (I think it's
called pay-as-you-go in the UK?) for use while I'm there. I've seen 'em
down to about 20 pounds which suits me fine as I only need a real basic
unit.

Are there any companies to avoid like the plague? Any recommendations?
I was thinking of going with Vodafone or Virgin 'coz I've had o.k.
service from them here in Australia.

For general all over UK coverage Vodafone or 02. If your planning on
visiting Scotland then still go for Vodafone or o2, the other networks are
not very good (outside major towns/cities) in Scotland.

You can buy Virgin PAYG SIM cards in any Virgin Megastore or generalist
phone shop for £10 and it comes with £5 of credit. I've just bought a 3G
Orange PAYG SIM card in an Orange shop for £10 and it comes with £10 of
credit (so the card is basically free). I've never had problems with Virgin
in Northern Ireland and Orange seems to work fine so far.

Just avoid T-Mobile, Virgin, or any other piggy-backing package that
utilises the T-Mobile network.
