Blackberry - Outlook - Exchange question

I know that a Blackberry can be used with the Blackberry Enterprise Server
(BES) to connect to MS Exchange, but I have an application where just one
user wants to use a Blackberry, so the BES isn't justified.

In 2005 I tried this using the Blackberry connected to the Workstation, with
Outlook on the workstation connecting to the Exchange server. The
Blackberry happily synchronised with any items held locally on the
workstation in a .PST file, but it would not synchronise with any
information held on the Exchange server and therefore visible in Outlook.
It was this data that the user wanted to see synchronised on the Blackberry,
of course! At the time the Blackberry supplier (it happened to be O2) said
that what I wanted wasn't possible. This certainly wasn't clear from the
documentation I read before trying it!

Has anybody tried this configuration more recently, or used a Blackberry
from a different supplier, and been able to get it to work?

Why not download a free copy of the BES which includes one user
licence?

Note: BlackBerry Enterprise Server can be installed on the same machine
as Microsoft Exchange as long as the total number of BlackBerry users
will not exceed 15. Once beyond 15 users, BlackBerry Enterprise Server
should be moved to a separate server.
