Default Blackberry/WiFi/Browser

Hello

I've got a Blackberry 8520 on Virgin.

It can connect to a WiFi network ok, but when I start the browser, it says
(something like) "Can't connect. Check with your service provider". If I
then type a url, it fetches the page correctly. Subsequent browsing is
always ok. It's only the 1st time you start the browser that shows an issue.

Now, I'm not up to speed on mobile terminology, but is the phone trying to
connect to Virgin first, and failing? Is this something to do with APN or
another setting? Why does it try to connect in this way if WiFi is
available? The Blackberry supplied docs are poor, and Virgin don't offer
this phone; so support from them may not be available.

Oh, it's not my phone. I just volunteered to try and make it work - with
your expertise!
Ta.

Probably just that your home page does not exist.

The browser in my Nokia phones is configured to 'Always ask' that way it
asks what connection I want to use at the start of each browser session.
Changin the SIM card general causes the phone to default to whatever network
the SIM card is for, and the above option has to be reselected.

Ta.
I think the BB was trying to use the mobile data connection rather than the
WiFi. I've now selected WiFi as the prefered method and it works every time
now.
Of course, it'd all work nicer if it had a proper BB plan. I think I'll
suggest the Orange BB PAYG £5/month and see how that goes for her.

Thats interesting. I gather this is on a virgin pay as you go sim ?

I've been toying with this idea, but with a bb bold I only want to have
a quick check of email or ebay sometimes whilst at home and don;t want
to boot the main computer up. So I'd only be connecting it on my home
wifi setup. Although there are many free wifi spots these days which
would be handy aswell.

I don't fancy paying BB £5 a month, alllthough thats not to bad consideirng.
