The HSDPA standard has data rates beyond 3.6 Mbps, in particular
7.2 Mbps and 14.4 Mbps downlink bandwidths. I think Cingular in
the USA might have some 7.2 Mbps deployment, and I could swear I
read they were going to have 14.4 Mbps in places by the end of 2007.
I also saw a 7.2 Mbps data card in use in Hong Kong (I think on 3,
though I'm not positive) at a tradeshow in December.
There's also WiMAX/IEEE 802.16, which several of the USA mobile carriers
have suggested they will deploy in the "3G" spectrum they purchased.
This in theory can provide up to 70 Mbps connections, with symmetrical
downlink and uplink bandwidths. And I know there is further UTMS
development going on to increase uplink and overall bandwidth to try to
compete with WiMAX as well.
