Our teenager's PAYG bills are getting a bit hairy now, it would be a lot
cheaper to switch to something like vodaphone's £10 pm plan (100mins & 500
texts pm). Worried that the careless little sod will lose it, but not
notice immediately. First thing we know, it's a bill for 629 hours of
international peak-rate call, etc.
Do any of the main mobile operators allow a pre-specified cap on additional
call charges?

Why not switch to VF freedom packs. Still PAYG, but you get similar deal.

T-Mobile Solo Fixed only allows you to use your monthly allowance and
nothing more. Any extra usage requires a top-up to the pay as you go
side of the account.

Thanks chaps - two good options there, I'll go and read up on them both.

Have you seen the current offers on 3? No better
network out there, in my view.
Last time we had a similar problem, 3 reduced the
overspend credit to £0.

Best PAYG for lots of min/text is Three flat12 with Stretch 20 or 25 add on
giving you 500 or 700mins or text for a 20 or 25quid top up
Only thing is you can't get new flat12 sims with it anymore, but you should
be able to buy a used one and refuse any attempt by Three to convert
you to new 3Pay

My existing Flat12 sims don't work in my Skype 2 phone - they get a
message about swapping them at a 3 store for a new one, for free. But
I'm concerned they'll try to move me to 3pay - which is no use to me
at all.
Anyone know why the old sim is no good for the Skype S2 phone?

It's not the phone it's the Flat 12 sim, any 3 PAYG sims connected
less than about 6 months ago will either connect on 3Pay or not connect
and you get that message.
Only 3 sims connected more than about 6 months ago could be on Flat 12
and many of them have been one way converted to 3pay.
So in other words Flat 12 has been "Ringfenced"
That's why i say if you have a Flat 12 resist any attempt by 3 to convert
you
Try asking on uk.adverts.telecom.mobile if anyone has a working
Flat12 sim for sale

How do they 'one way convert' such SIMs? Send you a text saying 'we're
converting you at the end of the month, scream now if you don't want to be
converted'? (Voda did that). So if people happen not to turn on their
phone that month they're stuffed?
Out of interest, apart from the extra stuff that comes from being with Three
(Skype, data, 3-to-3 calls), on just plain calls and texts where does Flat12
win over other operators (eg Asda)?

Nothing whatever, as far as I can see. I use it for the internet
addon, but now I have a skype phone, I'm dabbling with skype and using
the free messenger service.
It doesn't look like they will bring their call prices down to match
Asda, or even Orange OVP Virgin.

Three were sending me text suggesting i take advantage of 3pay
(without mentioning that the conversion is one way)

PAYG Flat 12 with Stretch 20 / 25 gives you calls or text at around
3p per min ( i think) with a 30 day use.
(which works out at around 500 / 700mins for 20 / 25quid p.m.)
Ideal for the heavy cross network user who can't get a contract

3 is cheaper if you use the phone enough to buy stretch add-on's, which
cost £15/300 minutes, £20/500 minutes or £25/700 minutes good for
30 days. When I'm in the UK I usually buy a £20 stretch; the top-ups
to buy that come with enough data, and more than enough texts, to last
me for a month, so the £20 alone is enough to cover an entire month of
my mobile habit.
Of course, since I can fairly reliably use up 500+ minutes per month I
could probably do even better with a monthly plan if I were in the UK
full time. Since I'm only there 4 months a year, however, Flat12
has the additional advantage that it costs me nothing for the other
8 months. For me it is perfect (which is why I'm pretty sure 3 will
eventually find a way to take it away).

Stretch also includes 100 3 to 3 mins
