Default Carphone Warehouse 0870 scam exposed

There's a whole lot more aggro to it, but basically Carphone Warehouse
have a scam involving their 0870 number which will never be answered,
and I've exposed it. OK, the video drags on a bit, but I didn't want
to put any edits in so it's clear there's no cheating!
http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?...63456841645458

I've told OFTEL, they said to check legal advice, which I briefly did,
and he says that if a charge is made with the expectation that a
service will be provided, and that service ISN'T provided (even after
the company has been told), then an offence has been comitted.

The video explains more.

Ha! I have a very small corner of a very small room, and no time to
tidy it!

This was shocking, I am not against 0870 numbers, If they had a technical
problem I could even understand that, but not for 2 months, is just
shocking, maybe if they put the same effort in getting good backroom staff
as slimey sales people they could run a proper company

This looks like a case that BBC Watchdog would love. See you on TV
next week.

Congrats on a well presented, informative video !

I've just sent a note to the news team over at The Register as well
about this, as it seems worthy of a story.

Wow - I'm a bit taken aback! I thought I was going to get flamed for
making a boring video and having a large hooter! (Note to self - never
turn sideways in vids!).

I just finished crafting a long, stinging letter too. I need to get
out of the house and be sociable now (there's only so much "Angry of
Tunbridge Wells" I can do in a day before needing t'pub), but I'll
edit the personal info out and post a copy tomorrow. Possibly.

Thanks for the support! I found a couple of people having the same
"ringing but not answered" problem on other forums, so I've PM'd them
for more info.

The clock you used is not controlled via a signal from Rugby as you
say. It's set via a signal from Anthron, Cumbria, see:

I made the video on the 29th March

Ha ha excellent.

I love it when an anally retentive idiot is given a taste of
their own medicine.

Excellent video too, I think you've managed to really start
something with it, people will be behind you because there
are so many people out there with the joint hatred of anything
carphone warehouse are involved in.

I for one, also hate that company, good luck with your
campaign!

From that article:

>Rugby.

Eh..? Atomic clocks at the antenna site..? Here's me thinking the clocks
were at NPL in Teddington, or have I got it wrong all these years..?

yes, we are heading that way.

I do same thing for all white goods no matter what age...............just
bin it.

take a look down your local amenity tip, I bet a penny to a pinch if sh1t
that there is a line of Dysons there somewhere. That guy is making a fortune
selling goods that can't stand the test of time.

I'll also bet that someone like me takes those Dysons away, cleans the
filters and gives them a wipe over then sells them on again as they
will be near enough brand new.

You've also got to look after things properly. Too many people expect
things to work all on their own with no human intervention for service
and maintenence. Most of the refurbished\reconditioned stuff we come
across is simply cleaning\regular maintenence, which if the original
owner did they would still have the machine working for amny years.

People also expect things to be bombproof, they're not, you can
overload and break things.

the upright Dyson has a particular part within the filter system that is not
repairable............only replaceable...............I speak from experience
as I know an expert who has met this problem.................needles to say
the replacement/repair outcosts getting another cleaner.

Indeed you did! I did check the date, but somehow thought you made it
later than that. I got home from the pub having had a good few beers
and felt it neccessary to make that post. My apologies!

I'd like to see where a filter costs more than a new Dyson.

I understand theat replacement parts for a decent model will cost more
than a cheaper version of the same device, but generally parts for
Dysons are cheaper than new ones.

The people who know what time it is run the clocks at NPL. The
caesium oscillators at the transmitter site will be used to control
the transmitter frequency and time code transitions, but the time
and frequency of the oscillators at the transmitter will be controlled
by reference to the NPL clocks (the article mentions time transfer between
the sites via GPS, which is typical). NPL finds out how its time is
doing from BIPM in Paris, which assembles a consensus view of the
time by taking measurements from national labs all over the world.

This is the usual arrangement. There is one or more caesium oscillators
at each Loran C transmitter, and in each GPS satellite, controlling the
output. Each of these is steered by reference to the collection of clocks
at a national lab somewhere, with these being steered in turn with reference
to BIPM. Owning a caesium clock isn't as big a deal as it once was. You
can buy one for your basement, if you want, for about the price of a car.

Ah, fair enough, thanks for the info.

Hmm, no thanks, I'll stick with the MSF signal, it's cheaper..!

Besides, I haven't got a basement <g>

Excellent video! I imagine it was quite difficult to co-ordinate all
that phoning so well done!

I suppose if you call from your mobile then it comes out of your
"inclusive minutes" (network dependent) but that's not really the
point...

I suspect CPW are not the only ones making a packet out of 0870 but I
was horrified when you explained that the numbers you were calling
weren't even connected! Have you emailed the video to Charles Dunstone
(I think his e-mail address is quite easy to find on Google).

Hope the story makes it onto Watchdog. I'll forward it to my friends.

Kurt

Ofcom have recently opened an investigation in to "possible misuse if
087 numbers" - see http://www.ofcom.org.uk/bulletins/co...en_all/cw_945/
for details
