"Carphone Warehouse has ended its deal with Channel 4 to sponsor Big
Brother, two months after the Shilpa Shetty racism row engulfed the
celebrity version of the reality show.
The company has held the £3m a year sponsorship contract for the hit
show for the past three years.
In January it pulled all of its sponsorship idents from around Celebrity
Big Brother in reaction to the negative media coverage of alleged racist
bullying in the Celebrity Big Brother house.
Carphone Warehouse was still contracted to sponsor this summer's Big
Brother series but, following further talks with Channel 4, the phone
retailer and broadband provider has decided to pull out of sponsoring
the show altogether."

Why does Big Brother need any sponsorship? Surely the massive profits
from the premium rate phone and text voting lines should be more than
sufficient to make the programme more than pay for itself without
needing (financial) input from a sponsor.

You are probably right there. However, as a broadcaster, if someone
came to you and offered large stacks of money to sponsor your show,
would you refuse them even if you didn't need it ?

Because the revenue from the show accounts for 20% of C4's annual budget.

But in the time BBB (before big brother) Ch4 did exist and so must somehow
have survived without the income from BB. Perhaps if they hadn't paid 4
trillion pounds an episode for some as yet unbroadcast episodes of The
Simpsons we could return to the point where actual TV programs could be
broadcast rather than the BB crap.

In the time before Big Brother (even if it was only six or so years
ago) there were a lot less channels and a lot less competition for
advertising revenue.

I may think BB is crap, you may think BB is crap, but more people
watch it than anything else on C4 and for them to drop it would
decimate funding for all the worthwhile programing it produces.

I think they'd probably lose more than 10% of their revenue.
