Default Are Chain letter Texts illegal?

A slightly gullible friend got a chain letter text the other day and being
of a nervous disposition was frightened into sending off the eight texts it
said she must to not get bad luck.
For me the most annoying bit is she is retired and cannot afford to keep
sending off texts to all unsundry!
Anyway ... She sent one to me but it didn't arrive.
Do the Providers look out for this sort of stuff and more to the point isn't
it illegal?
I've Googled it but can only see that ones asking for money are illegal but
what about those like this one that promise bad luck if you don't follow the
instruction?

Does she HONESTLY believe that she'll have bad luck if she
doesn't?

Just delete it and ask the person who sent it not to send any
more of those crap messages, anyone that sends me those kind
of texts gets a stern one back asking for them not to send me
any more crap like that.

She really needs to learn some common sense then.

No.

If it was repeated and malicious you might have a case but for a one-off
you won't get anywhere.

Unfortunately yes, some people really are that gullible!

I explained that to her ... So now she has sent out apologies to all those
she forwarded it on to.

Agreed - they're no different to the chain emails imploring you to
forward to ten friends within 30 minutes.........if you do, then at
exactly 11.11p.m tonight something wonderful will happen, if you don't
then you're damned forever in eternity.

I often wonder about the mindset of people who actually believe this
sort of drivel...........

I'd also like to know what kind of person thinks it's funny to
instigate such an email and what the point of it is.

it's probably like religion - the person who starts it actually believes
it's true too sometimes.

Better still, just delete it and don't bother asking the sender to
stop. It costs nothing to receive a text - if you get any more delete
them as well free of charge

You hit the nail on the head there :-)
The "slightly gullible" friend got a chain letter text in the first place is
very religious!

You've never had a reverse-billed SMS spam message then..?

At £1.50 a time they become expensive as well as irritating after a time.
