Is there some subtle difference between 0800 and 0808 numbers? Or are
they identical and represent nothing more than a continuation of the
0800 number range?

In a similar vein to the above, I used to think 0845 and 0844 were
pretty much the same. Then I called an 0844 from my orange on the old
EveryDay50 tariff and was charged 40p a minute in the evening! As
another example, I find that Tiscali's Daytime Extra plan will not
connect my Virgin Media landline to an 0844 number at all!
So that set me wondering if the 0800 and 0808 are different.

I use Virgin Media's Talk Unlimited (or "Size XL") with inclusive
geographical calls 24x7. The website blurb for my tariff refers to:
"charges (per min) for Freephone numbers beginning with 0800". It does
not mention 0808.
