Downgrading iphone firmware (without jailbreaking)

Has anyone successfully tried restoring 5.1.1 firmware using this technique?

I thought it was going well until I got an error message and my phone was
left unchanged.

Perhaps I need to investigate the jailbreak options. Any tips? (iPhone 3gs
with latest firmware).
