All of a sudden today I had several text messages from someone in
Sweden come through on my landline (from 07953 966066). Is this
18185's system (who I've recently started sending texts through)?
Because the texts weren't in English and were being read as if they
were, none of them was decipherable! To add to the confusion, several
other texts from the same person came through normally to my mobile.

So the messages are from something/someone who knows both your mobile and
landline number. 18185 will not know your mobile number unless you have
added it as a number you wish to make calls from. Have you done that? If not
I don't see any reason it's directly to do with 18185.

07953 966066 is the T-Mobile message centre number (also used by virtuals
such as M&S, Fresh and Virgin).
They come through as voice even on SMS enabled phones as they use a
different message centre to that used by the others (including cable) who
use the BT Text service.
18866 / 1899 / 18185 SMS have been coming through using the BT Text service.

Yes, indeed. Actually the landline is in the name of the person
who's in Sweden at the moment.

Not that I recall. Most probably not.

Ah. The puzzling thing is why (some of) these texts should suddenly
start coming through on the land line out of the blue.

Presumably one would have to register/ sign up for such a service
first?

I think I know what is happening, when you send a text message from 18185
the caller ID is that of your landline. So, although you may of only
previously told the person in Sweden your mobile number he/she will see your
landline number in the text message and using mobile's reply button it will
go to your landline.

Just to add to my own reply, I just tried setting up a separate new account
with 18185 but this time using only my mobile number, hoping this would make
text messages sent from website have the caller ID of my mobile rather than
my landline. But instead they are shown as coming from 08081701708.

You need to make a call from your mobile to 18185 briefly, this
registers your phone and then the sms option will include your mobile
number

I've done exactly that twice and still only my landline and the 0808 options
appear.

Great, thank you that worked on 18866. Oddly it wouldn't on 18185 ... bug or
something I guess.

I'm using it on 18185. Try holding the call a few seconds longer, and
wait a while b4 u log into to 18185 so it gets a chance to register.

No.
Same as you don't sign up on your mobile to receive standard SMS texts.
