Around ten years ago, Orange used to offer mobile service on
an London Geographic number.
I would find it useful to have this service right now, and I
am wondering if anyone here knows whether any of the big operators
offer such a service today ?
Even if it is sold by one of the major networks, I wonder whether
it is instead cheaper to get a Geographic number forwarded to a
conventional mobile & 07 number (~10p/min ish ?)...
Any ideas welcome,
Andy

A slightly off-the-wall idea, but I wonder if there are any foreign networks
that have cheaper roaming costs than to call a UK mobile? So, for example,
if you had a US mobile (which already comes with a geographic US number)
calling it from the UK would be roughly free. So diverting a UK geo number
to a US geo number would be roughly free too (maybe a penny a minute or
less). You'd then have to find one that roams in the UK for less than
10p/min for incoming calls. Maybe that wouldn't work for a US mobile, but
perhaps there's a country it would work for - maybe one of the
'international roaming' SIMs?

You could get a free Sipgate VoIP account and forward that to your mobile.
No terminal equipment required if it's going to be on permanent divert.

If you're doing a lot of call divert, it might be worth getting a
Fixed Cellular Terminal with 'Follow-Me' functionality.
If you have a sharer sim with free calls between the sharers, you just
plug the unit into your landline and calls can be forwarded to your
mobile (both your landline and mobile phones can ring simultaneously
if you wish).
Cost is therefore just the cost of a sharer sim (£12.50 to £15
depending on tariff/network) once you have purchased the unit.
I sell the Telecom FM CellFax for (£165 + postage) + vat, although
personally I use the more expensive Burnside P910 (as I can text it
and find the cli of who's rung me if I miss a call!).

Orange still do it, it's called Locally Integrated Number, you pay a one
off set up fee and a per minute rate for incoming calls. Codes available
I think are 0207 and 0161 and possibly one other which I can't remember.

Took a bit of searhcing but I found it buried on one of Orange's PDFs, pay
monthy price guide at:
"If you don't want people to know you are using a mobile phone, you can have
a local number. Available for London,
Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester dialling codes No initial charge.
Monthly charges: a number local to your
billing address £17.63 a number not local to your billing address £32.25
cost per incoming call (pm) 10p"

At that price, forget it. A voip.co.uk or Sipgate local number is
cheaper, better, more flexible and can be used with any mobile network.

There must be a reason they don't want people to use it - any idea what
it is?

Cheaper to use Sipgate then, no monthly charge and still 10p/min for the
calls.

: : Agreed, the only downside is outgoing CLI.
I don't send outgoing CLI so that's that one dealt with ;-)

No. I was saying that orange offer 0207 and 0161 as a geographic prefix.
Orange do not offer 020.

I'm not surprised at that price.
Like I said, get a *free* Sipgate account and divert that.

They obviously do offer 020 as that is the code for London, wheras
0207 is a code plus another number
