Hmm, while giffgaff may be ok domestically, I should warn potential
users that roaming overseas is may be much more limited than they claim.
My wife and I have recently returned from a trip to Central America, and
she recently got a giffgaff SIM for her 3-band phone. Before going she
checked from the giffgaff website that they had roaming throughout.
Here experience contradicted this:
Costa Rica: phone registered ok, but any attempt to make a call got a
message that the call was barred.
Panama: also registered ok, but any attempt to make a call got a message
(in English only) "Dear customer your cellphone stop has been activated,
dial *116 for information". She tried to call this number, but it got
"call barred".
Colombia: also registered ok, and could call fixed line numbers in the
UK, but attempts to call a UK mobile number repeatedly failed. Incoming
calls worked.
It would be interesting to know whether this is because giffgaff needs
to negotiate its own roaming agreements with the foreign cellphone
companies and it has made a mess of these, or whether it relies upon the
O2 roaming agreements, and these are defective?

http://travelabroad.o2-uktech.com/coverage.php tells me that if
you're on PAYG on O2 then Costa Rica is out, Panama is OK using
Movistar, and Colombia OK with Comtel and Telefonica Moviles.

they can roam on i wouldn't use any
A Zero contract sim like Orange OVP Virgin with full roaming is good,
but a local sim will get you the best rates.

We're going to China shortly. Does anyone know if giffgaff works there?
There are also limitations on ships where one cannot make o/g calls or send
texts via the MCP service (unlike O2 users).

You'll be lucky - though it would be good to know. Of the main 5,
only O2 claims to be able to roam with PAYG, and outside of the Beijing
you have to use a callback system of calling - though I've not tried this.
Lycamobile (which uses O2) claims to roam in China and even asking their
customer service peeps they confirmed it would, but the SIM I have
resolutely failed to register anywhere in the areas of Shenzhen, Kaiping,
Jiangmen and Guangzhou. (It did work in Hong Kong.)

Note that it does say a couple of posts upthread to Bob's, [which Bob quoted
but you didn't] that the affiliate gets a fiver too, and he posted in
response to a solicitation for such information. Your posting strikes me as
being malevolently economical with the quoting, to what end I've no idea.
