Free calls and text between Giffgaff users are only valid for 3 months after
a top up

Has it been 3 months since a top up?

I won't be getting rid of my giffgaff, it's always free 0800 access is ideal
for making cheap calls with callthroughs

Top up about a month ago. £25 rewards for being helpful on the
Community Boards. No point in free 0800 nos. if they are going to rip
me off for gg to gg calls and texts .

Mine free calls, etc. are working fine here.
Have you tried asking GiffGaff why yours aren't:

Indeed, no point whinging on here, call or email giffgaffs CS
you could be in line for another bonus for their cock up

I don't know anyone else on giffgaff so it doesn't worry me,
i haven't topped up for at least 4 months and won't for months yet.
All my calls are cross net calls through 0800 callthroughs,
or calling 0800 numbers.

Apparently if you don't top up for three months all 'perks' are
stopped - free texts / calls to other giffgaffers, AND 0800 nos, are
charged for, etc. So I don't understand how you still get 0800 for
free.

So what 0800 call throughs are there for calling other mobiles and
landlines?

BTW I wasn't moaning - I was warning that giffgaff is not the the
golden telco. people think it is. There have been other long threads
against giffgaff here before. And their CS were not helpful - "nothing
we can do."

AFAIK free 0800 doesn't end, i would have hoped that the other
networks would have followed suit and end their freephone meaness

Obvious ones are lycatalk and 1899.com.
lists at:
http://www.telecom-tariffs.co.uk/residx.htm
Indirect Accounts (non BT lines)

There may be VOIP callthroughs with 0800 access but i don't know of any,
if there is they could offer the cheapest rates.

Also there are point scoring callthoughs like Predial and QXdial
where you score points on say a BT phone with unlimited 0300
(scoring 1 point per ten mins, or more points calling 0870, etc)
and have the points transfered to your giffgaff to use on their 0800
access numbers.
QXdial:
http://www.qxcall.co.uk/index.php?op...=26&Itemid=113

Pre-dials old site doesnt seem to be working?
http://www.pre-dial.com/

0800 callthroughs were very popular from 1995 when Orange
started their PAYG service with free 0800 access.
At that time AXS which became Tiscali Talk offered calls to landlines
at 2p all times with no connection charge

and of course when calling utilities many have free 0800 numbers
which can be discovered at
http://www.saynoto0870.com/

I can't recommend Giffgaff as a PAYG because of online only top ups.
Quite absurd when they are squarely aimed at the teen market, unless
they expect teens to borrow and register their mums Debit / Credit cards?

I would have thought Giffgaff would have learnt from Three who
also started their PAYG service with only online top up. Three then
quickly realised they had to offer printed e-tops ups too.

Understandably to keep costs down Giffgaff only offer online
customer service

That was the motivation for my earlier question in uk.telecom... 1 pound per
minute to international destinations outside their very small selection is
just punitive. I'm happy to pay the UK call/text costs for giffgaff, but 60
quid an hour is just silly.

So far I've only found a limited selection of expensive 0800-callthroughs,
or the calling card people. But I can't seem to find a price comparison of
calling cards, and they're a morass of restrictive tariffs (eg card only
lasts 90 days, service fee per day, confusopoly of products etc etc)

I'm tempted to try to set up my own 0800 callthrough via VOIP, but I need to
find somewhere that'll do a sensible PAYG for the number. I already have a
ringback system, but I suspect 3p/min for the inbound call to mobile isn't
going to last for long.

The other alternative is to use Three Skype and route everything over VOIP
(cos Three's phone charges aren't very good, even on Flat12)... but that's a
bit fiddly and doesn't leave me a lot of option if my Skype/SIP gateway
breaks. Plus I'd also need to do something about texts (Three's rate ain't
cheap, either on Flat12 or 3Pay). Are there any good internet-SMS apps for
Nokia S60v5 (Symbian or J2ME)?

You can now topup by voucher. It should be rolled out on all the major
payment networks (Paypoint etc) by now:
http://community.giffgaff.com/t5/Wel...ight/true#M805
but if there's a problem you can also use O2 topup vouchers.

Don't even look at newsagent callthrough cards they are all a rip off
most steal your credit after 90 days.
Although the 99p one from 99p stores is handy for emergency use

Take out an account with a callthrough company, preferably Post Pay
with Itemised Billing, paid by Direct Debt, such as 1899.com or lycatalk,
etc.

I know of VOIP for as little as 2.5p per min to UK mobiles but not with
0800 access

I hope to be able to report soon of a new callthrough service accessible
