1) They are clearing them out currently in preparation for a new model
2) paying for a contract mobile phone is daft when you can get them for
'free' in almost all other cases.

I bought one yesterday as they're clearing out stock for £169 due to
the impending announcement of a new model (probably a 3G mark 1 or
somesuch).
It's great, I had an iPod Touch before so was familiar with the
interface and what it did.
No brainer below:
£199 8Gb iPod Touch
£169 8Gb iPhone
I don't have any o2 coverage at home, so I just bought the phone, went
home, used ZiPhone 3.0 on it (free, but please donate) which unlocked
it to any network then I downloaded the 1.1.4 firmware installed it
and did ZiPhone's bit again.
So now I've got an iPhone on T-Mobile web'n'walk and I never have to
touch an o2 contract.

Also, software upgrades (not update) from apple that are chargable for
the iPod Touch are free on the iPhone. This includes the google maps /
email application update in february - and presumably will include the
coming June update that offically opens Microsoft Exchange Server
communications and 3rd party applications (including free) downloading
through iTunes, and will in my estimation send geek and business demand
for it through the roof. Watch out Blackberry - Apple is seriously after
your customers :-)
Watch the "March 6th Event" video on Apple.com if you really want to
know where this is all going. No one has anything as portable and
flexible out there - it's another 'platform'.

How long is the exclusive deal with O2 and does anyone think it's
likely they will open it up to other networks anytime soon. What's the
reason not to?

Dunno, but 5million iPhones have been sold and ZiPhone has been
downloaded 4million times. Make of that what you will...
