Any advice as to what mobile to buy to ensure mobile access for future
trip to Japan ?

the only phones from "over here" that will work "over here" will be 3G,
but check which networks have roaming agreements in place, those that do
may be able to advice better on specific phones.

A 3G one is a must. Contract if you want to roam.

If you are planning on roaming with a UK SIM you need a 3G phone.

If you are planning on getting PAYG local phone service when you get
there don't bother buying anything special to take with you. They'll
make you buy, or rent, a phone along with the service anyway, and you'll
want to use that phone since it will also get service outside the 3G
areas.
