Price, size and performance-wise the SE K800i is a great phone and
strongly recommended. But like so many other phones in this bracket
(them all perhaps) the video capture quality is not impressive.
Conversely, the K800i stills camera is quite superb. It's a Cybershot
with a proper flash.
The other downside of SE phones is that they use Memory Stick Micro
(M2) memory cards, which, compared to miniSD, are very expensive,
though considerably smaller - no bigger than a man's finger nail. Yet
these cards are coming down in price almost every day - which is
encouraging.
For best video capture I use the Nokia N93 phone. But it's rather
bulky and costs a lot more (c. £400). So if you can put up with the
K800i's inferior video recording ability I would go for that model. In
fact, all things considered, Sony Ericsson's K800i is probably the
best phone on the market right now. I give it 4.75 stars out of 5.
There are four protective cases to consider:
1. SE model IAC-25 = a nice fit and looks trendy. Phone has to be
removed for use.
2. Older model SE ICE-25 leather case. A tightish fit until K800i beds
in. But very functional. Phone comes out of case for use. ICE-25 was
the case once recommended for the T68i. But it fits the K800i all
right. Being leather ICE-25 stretches round the phone.
3. The BodyGlove Wet-Suit style case (as sold in CarphoneWarehouse et
al) - reasonable fit, though IMHO a bit cheapo-looking. Functional
enough however. Use phone in case.
4. Krusell Leather Case = Perhaps the best, albeit a very
tight-fitting affair. It's advisable to heat this case up first before
inserting the K800i. Then the case will shrink round the phone, which
can always be used in the case.
One way or the other I reckon your son will be well pleased with a
K800i. We're delighted with ours.
P.S. Rather than pay top dollar for a SIM FREE K800i you might want to
consider getting a Pay As You Talk phone from one of the big networks
and unlocking/debranding it using a service like:
www.wotanserver.com
I can't say if this practice is legal (or not) but my husband used it
recently on his K800i and the result was perfect. I think the charge
was about £5 and the procedure was carried out entirely via the
Internet. So maybe worth considering to save a few quid.
