Default K800i supplied 'unlocked' on Orange PAYG?

Yesterday I bought a PAYG SE K800i from my local CWP store and was
amazed to discover that it was unlocked.

Is this common?

I thought all network-subsidised phones were locked to the subsidising
network and did not accept another network's SIM. Not so in this case
apparently. 02/Voda/Virgin and T-Mobile SIM work fine.

The phone cost £180 PLUS £20 airtime credit = £200 in all, which seems
about thirty quid cheaper than a SIM-FREE K800i purchased online.

my k750i from e2save - i.e CPW was also unlocked - as was the motorola razer
i got from them a year ago.
tellingly the ones i saw in shops had a little orange logo on then - but
mine didnt.
presumably it allows the CPW to stock 1 type regardless of the network you
get it on rather than 5 slightly different copies of the same phone.

CPW like to use unlocked GSM stock where possible,
Orange refused to let CPW use them.

Sounds like until now

Actually, CPW has been allowed to use generic stock of a pre-approved
(by Orange) list of phones for about a year now. You cannot have
Orange Care on these handsets though.

At CPW, yes.

You have a generic K800, not an Orange one. Did you get a USIM with it
or just a SIM?

It was a USIM.

Actually, the guy in CPW told me they'd been having bother with Orange
3G SIMs to the extent that the sales staff had been told not to push
the K800i handsets on Orange. He only sold one to me because I
specifically asked for a K800i on Orange and, as it happened, they'd
'just' got a batch of new Orange USIMs into stock.

IMHO the K800i is the best phone I've ever had. Much better even than
my previous K750i, which I thought would never be improved upon.
