Default leaving t-mob early

The missus is 12 months into an 18 month contract she took out with t-
mobile. She's on combi 20 + web'n'walk.
She wants to bin t-mob and end the contract early, and take her number
elsewhere - to O2 and the Palm Pre.
After talking to t-mobile today my understanding is that basically you
have to pay up 6x line rental payments to leave 6 months early (which
I guess is fair enough) and can't lower the tarrif to make this
cheaper until the final month of the contract.
Also, it's not possible to port a number *out* of t-mobile mid
contract (she wants to keep her number), and then have a new number
assigned to the old contract, so she can give it to a relative to use.

Is this correct? Any tips for reducing the cost of ending it early?

Ric

Porting out a number will terminate the account associated with that
number. Happens with any network. If you end the contract early,
there's nothing to give to a relative to use...

It seems what you really want is to take the number to O2, but keeping
the actual contract going (with a new number) so someone else can
continue the existing contract. You can't do it. Porting the number
ends the account, and to end the account, you'll need to pay the
remainder of the contact up front.

She needs to decide which it'll be - keep number (and get a Pre and pay
£120ish to terminate), or give contract (and number) to relative now and
jump to Pre immediately.

Figured as much. Thanks.

Question: she's on combi 20 with web'n'walk, which takes it up to
around 30 quid a month. the contract came with a Palm Centro via
Expansys originally - free phone on this tarrif, which I suspect is an
expansys-only deal they came up with reselling t-mobile contracts.
I'm not clear if her contract allows her to lose the web and walk -
i.e. just pay 6x£20 to terminate. T-Mobile suggest not.
I know I should just read her contract but she's not sure where it is
and I said I'd try and sort it all out for her...

Most networks allow you to downgrade tariffs one step at a time from
month 9 onwards (on an 18 month contract). Not sure if this is the
case for T-Mobile but it might be worth checking - just incase the
person you spoke to wasn't just trying to make you pay more than you
should!
