Default Looking for SIM

My granddaughter is going to the UK this weekend and is taking her unlocked
cell phone. She will be in and around Manchester and Liverpool. She is
looking for a SIM that will allow cheap calls to the USA. Does anyone have
suggestions which SIM she should buy?

Thanks.

Is her mobile a Tri-band or Quad-band phone?

The USA uses GSM850 and GSM1900 whereas most of the rest of the world
use GSM900 and / or GSM1800.

O2 (+ virtual Tesco) and Vodafone mostly use GSM900 (With a few fill in
GSM1800 cells).

T-Mobile (+ Virtuals Virgin, Fresh, M&S etc) and Orange use GSM1800.

If her mobile is only USA dual-band, then she's out of luck. If
Tri-band then at least you'll have a couple of networks to choose from,
if quad-band then no problem.

I'm sure someone will be along with details on which is cheapest for
calling the USA.

Assuming your phone handles the 1800 band, Orange may be a good choice.

She can call the US for only 5p per minute, using the 'Call Abroad SIM'.
