Default Lycamobile SIM oddity

Grandma has an Anycool W02 mobile telephone:

big-Voice-ce-mobile-phone-low_13039978.shtml>

and a Lycamobile SIM card, but the combination doesn't seem to be a winning
one. It seems to have a problem with registering; sometimes it registers
straight away and works fine. Sometimes the phone keeps rebooting and then
eventually registers [you can tell it's worked because it makes a bloop-
bloopy noise]. I have tried an O2 SIM card in it and it works fine,
instantly. I have tried the Lycamobile SIM in my 6310i and there seems to be
a delay of about a minite before you can do anything with the handset that
doesn't result in "SIM card not ready", but after then it's fine.

I suspect the delay with the Lycamobile SIM is 'normal' and the Anycool W02
is just a shoddy POS, but can anyone confirm if a delay before registering
is normal with a Lycamoble SIM?

I don't know how to describe this correctly; I hope you can
understand what I mean.

The original Lycamobile SIMs (prefix begins 075) were native to
the Orange network. The newer Lycamobile Plus SIMs (prefix
begins 074) don't have a home network; they roam on O2.

I suspect that it's the roaming aspect which is causing the
behaviours you have observed.

Yeah, that fits what I've seen as it's an 074 SIM. I guess the Anycool W02
is buggy and she's just going to need a SIM card that's "native" on its
network.

In that case don't get Vectone as it's also a "roaming" SIM. It
roams on T-Mobile.

The only way I know of to tell a "native" from a "roaming" SIM
is to try it in a phone which indicates when it is roaming.

I was using my T-Mobile dongle in Widnes Mersyside today, and when I
reconected a message poped up saying I was about to roam onto a non-UK
network which would incur higher call and text charges. Did I want to
continue?

Something like that anyway, I forgot to save thee screen-shot I took.

What network was that likley to have been?

I have never used a dongle so I don't know what information you
can get from them.

If it definitely said "non-UK" then what is near Widnes? Isle of
Man. Republic of Ireland. Neither seems likely.

Perhaps it was offering Orange and the message you saw was a
generic message that is displayed when roaming is detected.
Does the dongle's manual give you any information?

If the manual doesn't help then someone at T-Mobile should be
able to give an authoritative answer. How you reach such a
person...

I know what roaming is as in when I go abroad, but can you
explain what you mean by 'roam on O2'?

Some phones indicate when they are roaming. Perhaps they display
an "R" or a triangle or some other way.

If I put my Vectone SIM in an old Motorola W377 there is a
triangle which indicates that roaming is active and the service
provider is displayed on two lines; the top line shows "T-Mobile
UK", the second line shows "Vectone Mobile". A Lycamobile Plus
SIM (prefix beginning 074) in the same phone shows the roaming
triangle, "O2-UK" and "LYCAMOBILE".

An old Lycamobile SIM (prefix beginning 075) in the same phone
does not show the roaming triangle and for the service provider
shows only "LYCAMOBILE".
