Default MDA Vario2 WiFi probs

Anyone here using an MDA Vario 2 with wifi that does not keep dropping out
then trying to go via gprs?

Basically when at home I have a couple of webservers to access (One of them
my slimp3 server; www.slimdevices.com) and a video player. Both of these are
on my internal (home) network. If I turn on my Wifi next to my access point
it connects, but more than 5 meters away it can see it with 50% signal
quality, but never manages to connect
Any suggestions

TIA

The devices on your home network are not relevant to your post as far as
I can see.

If you're having wifi troubles make sure that your device is set for
maximum performance. By default it's set to maximum battery which means
poor range and speeds. You might also try re-positioning your router
and/or adjusting the direction in which your antennae point.

I mentioned these as I am accessing them directly via an IP address, I was
not sure if that would make any difference.

Does your wireless AP/router have two antenna? Remember that vertical
position will propogate the signal with most power horizontally, which
probably isn't what you want.

Instead of this:

angle them as such if your AP is upstairs:

Or, if the AP's downstairs, and you want to use it standing up and walking
about throughout your abode:

/ \

Sounds like it wont have much effect, but you'd be surprised. Also, your AP
is capable of 'upping' it's transmit power, the default is 35mW on some
devices, but they can go quite safely up to 80 - or 120 if you aren't
paranoid about frying your wee brain.

Cheers for that Dave

I have reset my AP aerials (spelling???) and now have full strength through
the house, but still have problems connecting. Yet when outside I can
connect straight away to my neighbours wide open belkin
Looks like its an issue with my netgear router.

Now is this going a little off topic? (even though its a mobile phone)

Thanks again, additional suggestions most welcome.

Your right, but your radio transmission knowledge is a little flawed. A
vertical aerial transmits a verticaly polarised wave, a horizontal aerial
transmits a horizontal polarisation. When you put the aerials in the
orientation that you have suggested you are setting them for a form of
mixed polarisation ie to catch both vertical and horizontal polarisation.
This mixed polarisation can occur naturally as signals bounce off objects.
I really don't see that the last suggestion is any better for what you
propose than the first setting, they really are one and the same. In fact
the second could cause signal loss due to interaction between the 2
aerials as they should be a minimum of at least a quarter wavelenght
apart, which the physical spacing on the case would ensure.

Delete all of the stored wifi settings from your phone and start again
with security off on the router. Allow the phone to find the network
and click on connect (internet) when prompted. If this works, again
delete the stored wifi settings, put the WEP security back on on your
router and again allow the phone to find the network, bash in the WEP
key and away you go.
