Default Mobile Phone Cashbacks - We want your views

I am a mobile phone dealer and there is a current call for the
ceasation or heavy regulation of mobile phone Cashback deals . This
has come about after several instances of mobile phone dealers going
into administration and therefore leaving customers with bills of
several hundred pounds.
The current feeling is that free gifts should be the way forward
instead.
I know that there have been several postings about these firms and
cashbacks and there is a feeling that something should be done now.
The dealer association the IMPDA (Independant Mobile Phone Dealer
Association) has been asking dealers their views on the subject.
Their founder member Chris Caudle has been speaking
about the subject on You and Yours on Radio 4 after the programme
received several complaints and has now set up a poll on their site.
They have already canvassed dealers on the subject and are now looking
at getting you the customers views as well. The poll is on the site
www.impda.co.uk. We would urge everyone to make a vote and make their
voice heard.
What would you the customer like to see in place of cashbacks if you
have a suggestion or view please email
cashback.solution(at)impda.co.uk.(remove at for posting)
****They are not able to deal with specific complaints****

I can't be bothered to email... but if there's enough money for
'gifts' then use it to reduce the price instead. I don't WANT your
gifts. If I want / need something I'll look for it. Gifts put me
off.

I am of the same opinion. I have used and am using cash back deals but
I don't want gifts. I would rather have the deal at a reasonable price
and I can then choose to spend my money on what I want to spend it on
rather than choose from a list of gifts that the dealer thinks I may
want. I looked at the poll and it currently shows that 70% of
respondents want cash backs banned, I am with the 21% who would rather
see them regulated by Networks. Mind you it probably isn't
representative yet as there are only 88 votes so far.

How can you reduce the price of a free handset without giving cashback?

Networks don't want cashback, they wont step in to act as a regulator.

Whilst they say they don't want them I rather thought that they had
encouraged them in the past in order to boost sales. They can't have it
both ways, although I suppose that they have so far as they have had no
liability and have left the retailers to it.

I can appreciate that a system which is only financially viable if
people fail to get their cash backs is unsustainable and likely to cause
resentment amongst those who fail to meet the strict criteria for
successful claims. The idea of gifts as an alternative isn't the model
that I would go for as a replacement though..

Under the current model the incentive for a buyer isn't just the free
hand set as the cash backs discount the rental charge with inclusive
calls, texts, etc. Those who buy these look at the total cost of the
whole package not just the hand set.

No, the way forward is to stop all this ridiculous faffing about and sell
phones for realistic prices and not give them away with packets of
cornflakes and stupid "deals" to entice the foolish to "upgrade" their
phones every 5 minutes.

I have had a pair of Nokia 6310i's for the last 4 years and have no
intention of changing them until they fall to pieces. Then I will use the
spares I have in store.

Anyone who goes for these idiotic cashback deals deserves all they get.
Fools, every one of them.

I'm sorry ivor - I just don't agree with you. Each of my three kids has
a cashback phone. They have all been using them for 10 months, I've got
my cashback on all 3 of them, they have had a new handset, free calls
and free rental.

Why does that make me a fool ?

Nothing is free, you'll be paying one way or the other eventually. Look at
that firm in Birmingham that went bust the other week leaving people tied
into contracts they couldn't escape from.

Fools.

it's still not true though - i've certainly never paid in the end - but then
i stick to a large retailer who is less likely to go under.
sure some people end up losing, but i haven't - i'm not foolish.

Sorry Ivor. Still don't get it. I pay £25 a month for these 3 phones,
all on a 12 month contract. They give me this money back. If the worse
was to happen and the firms went bust I'd have to pay..........£25 a
month for the rest of the contract.

Not an onerous penalty to pay for the advantges I've had

On another forum, one dealer was complaining about how stupid the idea
was, and objecting to one person setting up a body and having the
arrogance to pretend to speak for everyone, not even just members

If the dealer can supply a free gift, then they can also supply the
cashback. If the current system relies on some people forgetting to
claim or the dealer making it difficult to do so with restrictive
conditions, then some people may prefer a lower but guaranteed cashback
that is paid automatically, say within 2-4 weeks, with absolutely no
need to send in vouchers and bills in a tiny window at several points
down the line. And, equally important, no need to make expensive
non-geographic phone calls which aren't included in your mobile call
package or send umpteen emails to get the dealer to send the cashback
either.
