Following on for my first questions re this ... mate going to Spain
with his Laptop and wants to be able to send some CV's off and do some
basic web work (not 'surfing' as such), ideally fully portably (in
case he can't get to an iCafe / with young family or WiFi Inet access
easily etc).
He's got an unlocked Nokia 5300, currently on VM PAYG and I think for
him to use it affordably in Spain he would need to get a Spanish PAYG
SIM with their Web-N-Walk deal? Or would the cost of that offset the
extra cost of web access via his UK VM setup?
Assuming a blue tooth dongle on the laptop and the right software is
any of the above a goer please (if not, what do we need)?

In my experience, virtually any laptop internet access of this kind
while roaming gets horrendously expensive. It might be ok if its for
nothing more that a couple of plain-text emails a day, but once you
get into sending attachments, web browsing etc the costs really start
to accumulate.
I'd suggest he finds out what deals are available on Spanish networks
with a local PAYG SIM.

Ok, I got that feeling from my previous posts ... :-(

Ok, well that seems to be the thing to look into (other than buying
the USB Web dongle / package over there) then (thanks) Chris.
So, I assume if we wanted to check this all out to make sure it works
in principal before he goes out there, he would need a (PAYG,
currently with Virgin) service that supports Web browsing then install
the Nokia software on his laptop along with a blue tooth interface
(dongle)? Would bt be 'preferable to a direct cable connection (and if
so what cable would he need please (I'm aware not all cables are
created equal etc))?
Is this one of those things that 'just works' (once you have all the
right hardware in place) or is there configuration to do on phone /
laptop?

Either BT or a data cable should work. At one time, I used to find
that a data cable connection to a Nokia phone worked more reliably
than BT, but with the newer Nokias this doesn't necessarily seem to be
the case any more. BT has the advantage that you can position the
phone somewhere to get the best signal, which may not be same place as
you want to put the laptop.
If he goes the BT route, install the dongle together with any
necessary drivers, and get that working first. Then install Nokia PC
Suite (downloadable free from Nokia's web site). If you use a cable
instead, check on the Nokia web site to find out which one he needs
for his phone model.
The VM PAYG SIM should be fine for doing initial testing with before
he leaves. In theory this should all just work, but life is seldom
that easy and you may find it takes quite a bit of patience to get it
all working properly.

Understood.
