I just inherited my daughters Orange K750i contract expired phone. I'd
like to use an O2 PAYG SIM in it.How can I determine what the phone's
current locked/unlocked state is?

Put the o2 sim in it and switch it on? Mind you, if it's an ex Orange phone
it is almost certainly locked to Orange at the moment.

I don't have an O2 SIM yet. I wanted to know if it would be useable on
the phone before I bought one.
Kind regards,

Go into the service menu >*<<*<* and have a look at the lock status. If any
of the padlocks are closed then the phone is locked.

In which case stick any sim other than an Orange one in it (borrow one if
you have to) and see what happens. Or follow Richards suggestion below (I
must admit, I'd forgotten about the SE service menu).

Thanks for the advice everyone. I tried a friends O2 PAYG SIM in the
phone and it reported "No SIM". So, it seems that the phone is locked.
Instead of changing to an O2 SIM can I change the phone from an Orange
contract to an Orange PAYG SIM?

Yes.
However, the K750i is a doddle to unlock and shouldn't cost you more than
£10 to get done in any independent phone shop.

If Orange supplied it then it's locked.

The message "No SIM" would indicate a fault with either that SIM or the
phone itself.
A locked K750i with an incorrect SIM in will say "Insert correct SIM"
and that is exactly to the letter.

No, but if you go to an Orange Shop SIM cards are free.

Where did you purchase it from? Some dealers use Generic stock which is
sometime unlocked.

indeed - usually the ones i see in high street shops have the orange logo on
them - unlike mine from e2save.

Er... can't remember without going to find the paperwork. It came in
an "Orange" box, with the "Orange" instruction book, etc though - I
know I was surprised to find out it wasn't locked, because all the
indicators were that it would be. It doesn't have the Orange sticker
on it though.
