N95?

Hi All
I read somewhere that Nokia's N95 standby timeis only about a day. I was
thinking about getting this phone...Anyone care to comment about battery
life/performance?

I gave my N95 to the wife. It was either she has it, or it goes the same
way as every other toy phone I've given - either drop tested off cell masts
or buildings.
Standby time on the N95 is about 1 day with the wifi scanning on, and about
2 days with it switched off.
Expect considerably less standby time if you should need to make a call or
two.

So not a lot of good as a phone then?

I've had one for about a month. Quite like it in many ways - especially as
it has a better web browser than my previous phone. Battery life is quite
poor, however, so you really need to be somewhere near a car or mains
charger if you are out for more than a day or so with it. Not so bad if you
are simply using it for voice calls and texting but any web browsing, email
downloading, radio/music player operations, camera use, etc. soon start to
run the battery down. The GPS literally devours the battery so no good for
use on a long trek on foot or cycle. I regret buying it in some respects,
but it's a nice gadget to play with!! The 5M camera is not as good as you
might expect, incidentally - doesn't always focus well (likes high-contrast,
brightly lit, subjects) and some shots, especially landscapes, seem
distinctly blurred. The digital zoom is useless. I think it's proabably a
software (photo compression) problem to some extent.

I don't usually get more than a day and a half out of the battery. It
was a real problem for me to get my head around but it's cured now.
Charge phone at night. Use phone during the day.

I've plugged my spare charger in at work and when I'm listening to
music in the afternoon from it I will sometimes plug it in for a bit
if I know I'm going to be making some long calls in the evening.

While some people don't like it (and their views are very much valid
if the phone doesn't do it for them) I actually really love this
phone. I've had mine for a good three or four months now so know my
way around it (not that it's complicated) and use pretty much all of
the features.

When I upgrade from it I'll get whatever the new version of the n95 is
but the n95 is going at the top of the 'great phones I've owned' list
along with the old Nokia 7110 and 6210.

Agreed. Charge it every night. GPS takes a while to lock on but is pretty
unshakeable once it is. If you don't fancy paying for voice nav with the
Nokia maps application, I can thoroughly recommend www.nav4all.com which is
(currently) free. Or mgmaps (google for it) which uses e.g. MS Virtual earth
maps. Absolutely must get an unlimited data plan to make the most of it
(e.g. Tmobile WnW). Camera is pretty good. Email and internet work v. well.
Good screen. Loud speaker. Good music player.

The v11 firmware takes exactly 70 seconds to get a lock. The v12
firmware uses aGPS so is quicker to get a lock.

That looks okay. I installed it this morning just because I use
my Garmin StreetPilot 2610 in the car/on the motorcycle as it's
waterproof. I might give nav4all a go to see what it's like one day.

If one isn't going to have this phone on Web'n'Walk or whatever other
unlimited data plans other networks may use then I don't think you can
use this phone in the way it was designed to be used.

5 megapixel camera is okay. Another poster in this thread said how
bad the digital zoom was. It's a DIGITAL ZOOM, not an optical zoom
therefore the 'zoom' is only enlarging the pixels on the image - the
camera can't zoom in itself as the lens isn't made to.

I use the normal Nokia email client it comes with and I've set it to
check my email every 30 minutes. I also use the standard gmail client
to check my Google Mail from time to time. Both work well.

The internet browser is as good as the Nokia e61's and better. The
introduction of a pointer is a great help and some real thought has
gone into it, plus the phones processor and memory can handle large
images without running out of puff and slowing down. Browsing through
the PROPER flickr.com website (not the mobile version) isn't an issue
and that's pretty graphics heavy. Pretty websites like
www.wow-europe.com are handled in a decent way and the ability to have
the phone shrink the page or zoom it in without a lot of bother is
also a bonus.

Loud SPEAKERS - two stereo speakers on the phone itself.

If you turn off 3G it performs better, and unless you talk for a couple
of hours a day it will get through a working day. You'll be charging it
every night.
