Default Network texts in Europe

I have a PAYG Nokia 6021 with T-Mobile. When I go to Europe I receive text
messages saying how much calls cost in the country I'm in. Bearing in mind
that it costs money to receive texts, am I paying for these? If so, can I
turn off these unsolicited network messages?

It doesn't cost money to receive texts, so it won't cost to receive those
texts either. (That is unless you are a USA mobile phone customer).

The UK is in Europe too (This is a UK group), so are you saying that in the
UK and the rest of Europe you pay to receive texts? If yes, then are you a
USA mobile customer and not a UK/Europe/Elsewhere customer?

I am a UK mobile customer and when I went to Spain recently, I got a message
from T-Mobile to say that sending a text to the UK costs 40p and receiving
them from the UK costs 19p.

Seems you may have only read half the message or mixed some of it up.

40p is the cost to send texts, texts are free to receive.

To make calls to the UK would have been 38p/min.

The 19p is the cost per min to receive calls whilst in Spain.

Picture messages are only 20p, so you could send text messages as picture
messages and send them half the cost.

It doesn't cost money to receive texts when roaming usually.

I assume they mean multimedia messages, or do they really check the type of
attachment?

The interesting part of this was that if you are on Flext, then the cost of
Picture/Multimedia messages comes out of your monthly allowance and is
effectively free.

I will not be sending any text messages when I am in Europe

I have never been charged for one of these messages, but they are a PITA.

Using my phone is the same in France as it is in Belgium as it is in The
Netherlands as it is anywhere else in the EU.

<Rant>
I do not need a text everytime I go to France, I go there several times a
year and know how it works.

I do not need a text everytime I cross a border, especially as when crossing
into Belgium is 1/2 an hour after they sent the one welcoming me to France
and I wont get the chance to read either of them until they have sent me
another when I have driven another border and got another text welcoming
me to another country.
</Rant>

not anywhere in the EU

maybe you should read a couple of them once in a while, as there are
differences in how to dial back to the UK or within the same country ,
or rather what is the default country if you put no country code

and that has changed in the last few years

It is simpler to just put in the country code into your phonebook, then it just
works no matter where you are.

Having phonebook entrys which work in one place and not in another are not for
me.
