Default NEW 12 months free handsets: N72, 5500, Z710i, E870, E900 + more...

For a long while now, the zero cost contract mobile phone landscape has
been a little stale, involving largely the same set of handsets coupled
with various networks and tariffs. Well, it looks like everything's
about to change (and about time too!) as Phonebox Direct and Cool New
Mobile launch the first salvo by releasing a whole new wave of zero cost
deals on Vodafone with a wide range of mid- & high-end handsets never
before seen at this price-point. This is by far the largest release of
new handsets onto the zero cost scene in over 6 months.

If my gut instinct is right, this is bound to be followed by similar
zero cost offers from other retailers, possibly on networks other than
Vodafone, so watch this space.

All of the following deals are on Vodafone's 12 months Anytime 500 + 250
texts tariff (500 minutes & 250 texts for £35 per month) and the
cashback is claimable in 5 parts after 4, 6, 8, 10 & 12 months.

The new handsets on offer fall into one of two camps:

(1) those handsets that have never before been available at zero cost on
any network. I shall label these as NEW TO ALL NETWORKS.

(2) those handsets that have been available at zero cost before on other
networks but not yet on Vodafone. I shall label these as NEW TO VODAFONE.

Nokia 6280 (black)

Sony Ericsson K610i (silver)

The above historic information about zero cost handset/network
combinations was compiled with the help of my new zero cost radar
facility, which you can find here:

lol, £35 a month doesn't seem much like "zero cost" to me.

Sorry - good point Zimmy. I should have made the terms of the deal much
clearer (it was, afterall, the middle of the night and I was a bit dopey).

The cost over the minimum term of the contract is zero only after
claiming the cashback of £420 from either Phonebox Direct or Cool New
Mobile (depending on which retailer you go for).

It's worth pointing out that there is a risk that either

(a) you fail to follow the terms and conditions of the cashback for a
particular claim, which will result in a failed claim and all subsequent
claims being voided by the retailer.

(b) you forget to claim one of your amounts, which will result in the
remainder of the cashback being voided by the retailer.

(c) one of your claims gets lost in the post, which will result in that
claim and the remainder of the cashback being voided by the retailer -
however, if you sent your claim via Royal Mail Special Delivery with
consequential loss, you can hold the Royal Mail liable for the
consequences of any lost/late-delivered post (namely, the loss of your
remaining cashback).

However, if you are very organised and can diarise your claims schedule
and keep all your paperwork in order for when you need to claim you
should have little or no problems with claiming the cashback.

ALTERNATIVELY...if you are nearing the end of an existing contract, why
not just use this information to hardball a decent renewal deal from
your existing supplier? It won't be quite as cheap as these deals but,
equally, it won't require you to claim any cashback - sometimes the cost
difference over the term of your new contract can be small enough (c.
£50-£100) to make it justifiable as a reasonable additional cost for
absolute peace of mind.

You missed out point 'D' and that's that they won't pay the cashback
no matter what and you will be in the Small Claims court?
