I am looking for a handset for a builder. He requires a phone with no
exposed buttons or other controls to prevent accidental operation of the
handset whilst in pocket.
He would also like a large clear screen, which can be easily viewed in
sunlight; camera, video, games, mp3, radio are not required features.
I have looked around the shops to no avail and so thought the knowledgeable
folk here might be able to help.

I would have thought his best bet would be some kind of flip-phone
where all the buttons are inside the flip. Something like a RAZR?

All (?) Nokias have a handset lock ("Select" then *) that works for
everything except 999, 112, and a couple of other-country emergency
numbers. Would that be sufficient?

No Don't - They are not all inside - mine keeps getting switched to silent
ring - I've missed some important calls because of the STUPID feature being
activated by it's external buttons! And that's not just in my pocket, it
happens when the holster as well. Bloody annoying :-(

He used to have Nokias but still managed to 'unlock' accidently - he has
called me, without knowing, on several ocassions.
Thanks, King Of Fools, but he gave-up on the RAZR when it kept switching to
silent via the side buttons - why don't Motorola give an option of
deactivating those buttons?
The idea of a holster may yet be the best option - thanks Ian.
Just use any nokia set the auto time lock delay to the required time i.e
within 5 seconds works fine for me all problems solved : )
