I went into an orange shop yesterday to look into upgrading my handset
as i was fedup waiting for orange to release (or even announce the
pending release of...) the n82. The manager in the shop told me Orange
would not be releasing anymore N Series nokias - ever.
I had heard rumours that they had fallen out with nokia over the music
download service, but surely this is a bit extreme. They are starting
to make 3look more attractive every day, this will surely increase
churn because even though they are often bug ridden the high end
nokias are about the only decent phones orange supply.
Can anyone confirm this, or was the manager simply trying to fob me
off with one of oranges "own brand" toy handsets to meet his sales
targets.

We were with Orange. I regret moving to 3. As soon as the contracts are
up I'll move from them.

Well, it can't surely have been as bad as moving from Orange to T-mobile
which is what I did...

Calls taking 60+ seconds to connect every time (& very often not
connecting at all); frequent 'Emergency Calls Only' state in areas of
"excellent coverage"; unpredictable roaming; CS droids who never divert
from their script and this are no use at all. What of T-Mobile?

There aren't any in the pipeline. Not sure about the "forever" part.
They are bug-ridden these days, best not to get one until after about 3
software upgrades have been issued.

Sounds exactly like T-Mobile.
Come back Orange all is forgiven. Now if only they could match the
pricing...

They work just fine without the software customised for Orange.
That is before mainline features are stripped out for Orange and shit
features added.
Maybe the issue is Nokia don't want to customise for Orange anymore!
Best not to get one on Orange!

Funny how all the other manufacturers cn manage it without too much
bother then.
> Maybe the issue is Nokia don't want to customise for Orange anymore!
Could be. Don't think it would make commercial sense though. Also, Nokia
ar still funding incentives for Orange so if there had been a falling
out I dont think incentives would be running.
> Best not to get one on Orange!
Just best not to go one at all until they've been out for a few months.

The unbranded ones are usually fine. I've had my (unbranded) N73 for a year
now, and it's been one of the most stable phones I've had in a long time.
Looking forward to receiving my (unbranded N82 :-) tomorrow. It's such a
shame (for O uses - Which I would NEVER be one of them) that they aren't
doing the N82, because it's such a featured, well built phone. The good
reviews all over the net speak for that........

I have the same experience here. No issues as soon as I debranded it
from the Orange crud. A few small bugs but nothing too serious and all
fixed quickly.

This is to be my next phone also. Guess I will use this as an excuse to
move away from Orange at the same time.
Where did you buy and what was the price?

Ebay - I also got my N73 a year ago on Ebay with no problems. - And a N72
for the wife!
It's (according to the seller) an unwanted upgrade, which makes sense I
guess. I know many that upgrade on the intension of selling. It's not an
import. It's a UK, unlocked, unbranded N82 - So I think it must've been
through 02 / Carphone Warehouse (who don't normally brand / lock their
phones).
Seller has very good feedback score, so fingers crossed! I paid £340. But
I'm swapping back from T-Mobile, to Vodafone. If I go on a £35/ month or
more tariff with Voda, I get £200 bill credit - So an unbranded, unlocked
N82 has only really cost me £140. And my N73 (with Full Tom Tom) sold on
Ebay should cover that!
It's a long winded way, but I can't stand branded phones! And it doesn't
look like Vodafone are doing the N82 either at the moment!

Thanks. I may look on ebay myself. Else I will just bite the bullet and
buy at Expansys in a couple of weeks.
So did you get your N82?
If so, how is it?

Yep, got it Thursday! Very nice! My only small complaint is the 5 way navi
pad. Sometimes difficult pressing right because of the raised multimedia key
on the right hand side, and sometimes makes a creaking noise. I do miss the
joystick on my N73, but I'm sure I'll get use to it! The number keys are
very small, but the spacing is good, and I'm already starting to get use to
them!
Another good purchase from Ebay - Phone was in brand new condition, with all
4 plastic films still intact!
Everything is working perfectly. Assisted GPS lock on in around 10 seconds.
Even in our living room! I've activated the 3 month free trial sat nav, and
tried it out locally today, with no problems!
Wifi works well! I've downloaded Nokia's free internet radio application,
and have been listening to quite a few stations via wifi from around the
world in stereo.
Camera is fantastic! The xenon flash was what made me get this over my
wife's N95 8GB. It really makes such a difference in low light.
Call quality is really good, callers sound really low tone with lots of
bass if that makes any sense! Signal strength is on par with my N73 (Very
strong).
It's a very nice weighted phone, that has a nice feel in the hand. The auto
rotation feature can sometimes rotate when you don't want it too, but very
handy when viewing web pages or photos. It can be switched off.
TV out works well. Connects to my Sony bluetooth stereo headphones fine and
music sounds as good as my N73.
I've signed up to Nokia's music download service (the whole reason between
the fall out with 0-Range and Nokia. I don't mind paying 80p a track and be
able to download it straight to my phone, and be able to play it straight
away. The bluetooth range with my headphones seems a little less than my
N73, but I'll see how it goes. I sometimes wonder how a device with GSM, 3G,
GPS, Bluetooth, Wifi all crammed in can perform as well in terms of signal
strengh, as a phone with just one or two connection options!
All in all, very pleased, and the best thing, 100% unbranded, sim free, and
unlocked.
Just going to fill it now with lots of applications! :-)
