Just got a new 2630 from Orange which I don't want. Missus likes it
though but she's on O2.
Went to chappie in the market to get it unlocked. initially he said no
problem, but when he checked the firmware version said "no way - SL3
encryption, no-one can unlock this phone".
Is this true what he's telling me? Googling would seem to support it.
Is there someone out there who can unlock it?
F/w version is V57.20
Other alternative is to move missus to Orange, but she's on O2 PAYG.
Can you get a PAC code for a PAYG number?

I'm surprsied that a well equiped unlocker can't unlock it,
for a cheap phone i wouldn't spend too much on getting it unlocked

Another alternative is to leave it locked and put it on a Orange virtual
like Lycamobile which might offer better rates? http://www.lycamobile.co.uk/
10p to other networks, 5p to landlines
free to other lycamobile (10p connection charge)

I take it then that it is possible to unlock it, just need to find a
guy with the right kit.

That would work if I can port her number, so will O2 give me a PAC
code and Lycamobile accept one?

This rather begs the question then, of why did you get it in the first place?

You can ask O2 for her PAC code and move to Orange Pay as you go.
Orange can supply the unlock code for £20.

Like most people who get phones they don't want... given by the
network when you renew your contract!
Only the one phone on offer so it's either accept it or throw it in
the bin!
But, you do actually have a choice in what phone you get! Networks don't
give away anything without a reason.

If thats the only pone on offer then you must be a very low spender. If
that is the case then you will undoubtedly be better off an a different
set-up, possibly a SIM only contract.

Yes and Yes, in fact Lycamobile will give you a bonus
for taking your PAC to them
Call O2 and ask for it, remember whatever credit you have on the
O2 account will be lost as soon as the PAC is used.
Could be worth your while getting a second Lycamobile for your
own use, so she can call / text you cheaply

Correct. I'm a very low spender. Most of what I use it for is out-of-
contract stuff, data and roaming.
I couldn't find a SIM only contract anywhere near as cheap as what
Orange offered me when my old contract finished, providing I took a
cheapo phone that I don't want. Plus I get another cheapo phone half
way through the contract.! It does seem rather a waste.
But that's the mobile industry for you. A few years ago when in
Australia I went into a shop to top my PAYG Telstra phone up. Came out
with a brand new phone instead. Phone was $99 with $200 free credit.
Cheaper to buy a new phone and throw it away when the credit ran out
than top up the phone I had.

FT Orange doesn't give away anything, full stop.

Or Orange give crap upgrades these days? I'm finally porting out my ED50
number, after 10 mins with OCR only wanting to talk about a zoo full of
animals
I'm taking it to Three M&M 6 month contract with a Nokia 6120c chucked in.

If you need contract for full roaming, take a look at Threes zero
per month, sim only contract
You will need a Three, or a unlocked 3g phone to put it in
Full roaming, full diverts, free Voicemail, free online itemised billing,
free windows live messenger, and with a compatible phone free Skype.
UK calls 20p, text 10p.
Like the former Orange OVP Virgin, the ideal low users Roaming sim

Try a SIM-shim.

A few flakes working together can unleash an avalanche of destruction
For customers joining in July, there is not even a connection charge,
but only the first ten minutes are free. After that, 10p per minute.
It's not a bad deal, and a much better deal than Orange PAYG.

and of course you could redial before 10 mins to keep it free.
But best of all no patronising Animal totem insanity on Lycamobile
unlike FT Orange.
