Have a Nokia 62301 that was originally on Vodaphone, though unlocked to all
networks. Now it has a Virgin Sim in it
and every 5 seconds it pops up "new voice message". Though there isn't any
msgs of any sort.

Virgin mobile being a virtual on T Mobile which is a PCN network,
has automatic PCN Voicemail.
My guess the phone hasn't sent the voicemail received signal.
Send another voicemail to it and read it.
That should clear it?
If not, it could be the phone is set to GSM rather than PCN voicemail
settings
If so, you will have to take it to a club nokia centre,
or try FBus by Maestro or similar software on it

Yep that's a good idea, put it in a known good PCN phone.
If that clears it, but it later happens again,
then the phone is set to GSM not PCN
