I've jsut "upgraded" with Orange to a 6233. The phone is fine in all
aspects except ability to hold contacts. There is a limit of 500 on this
phone which for me is useless. I have about 800, these were fine in my
previous phones, 6230 then 6230i. Even deleteing all the crap screen savers
and graphics etc. so there is plenty of phone memory left doesn't help.
Does anyone know a way around this? I guess it would have to a firmware
update to remove the 500 limit. I'm on version 04.54 date 01-08-06 RM-145

No, and they're all like that despite increased memory and ability to make
use of external cards. The majority of Nokia phones have a hard limit of
200, 300 or 500 contacts. Ignore their shared memory jibba jabba in the
specifications - their definition of sharing is not as one would perceive.

But why the change? The 6230 and 6230i have no such limit, despite being

They are not other manufacturer's phones! 6230, 6230i and 6233 are all
Nokias.

One possibility could be the "upgraded" OS running on the 6233
compared to the older models, which might place a restriction on the
number of contacts that can be supported.
The 6233 is a budget 3G phone, so they cut down on the other features to
make it profitable. If it wasn't advertised that you could only hold a max
of 500 contacts then take it back and get a better phone without 3G, 3G is
pretty useless they should have waited for something better over GPRS.
You also might want to consider cutting your loses with 800 contacts? How
often do you hear from or contact 800 people? Back your old contacts onto
your PC using PC suite.

Yes - I did wonder. I had a look at the N73 today, that looks quite good
but I do wonder about have an AF Carl Zeiss lens in a camera phone! But I
think I'll get send the 6233 back to Orange and carry on with the perfectly
fine 6230i. I'll ask them to value match the virgin 300 text 300 mins for
£20 deal I think, especially as I don't really want a new phone. If the
won't I'll just port to Virgin - the 6230i was unlocked within 30 minutes
of me having it :-)

Yes, have already done that, but it's good to have them all in one place and
lots of people do call me. I work in a support role for about 600 people
and I am quite involved in local politics, have been a councillor. You'd be
amazed how the contacts build up!
You might be able to get something better if you're not getting a new phone,
O2 gave me £100 cash back and put me on a £8 per month 50xnet minute tariff
basically costing me £9 to keep my old number.
I then took out a new contract to get my N73 which is the best smart phone
i've ever had. 6230 was my last best phone, the only down side was the small
screen but 6230i must be amazing.
