Default Nokia E61 question

When I turn my E61 on, as the welcome music plays, it presents me with a
list of networks (wireless, network points) to connect to as the welcome
music plays. It never used to do this, and I think the problem started
after the phone crashed and I had to reboot it. Does anyone know how to
stop this prompt from appearing as nothing happens after I select a
network to connect to and it seems a bit pointless. Tried powering off
the phone by removing the battery.

I take it that I need to back the phone up before doing this then
restore the backup afterwards?
