Default Nokia E70 software update now out

See http://www.nokia.co.uk/softwareupdate for more info.

However, I've just tried to update my E70 and the computer lost
connection with the phone near the end of the update, at which point the
screen had 'test' and other such words in different sizes of writing.
The computer said to remove the battery, which I did, but on replacing
it the phone no longer works and continually reboots itself (the word
NOKIA appears, then flashes, then it looks like it reboots).

And whilst reading this, this error has just appeared on the computer
screen:

"Nokia Service Layer Host Process has encountered a problem and needs to
close"

Use the update at your peril. If anyone from Nokia is reading this,
perhaps they would like to suggest what I should do now? You can remove
nospam from my e-mail address to make it work.

Mark.

A trip to a Nokia service center looks to be in order, if you want it
fixed.

If you read the warnings prior to using the software it says if the phone
fails to update and is in warranty they will repair the phone at a service
centre.

That error is a problem with nokia PC suite, i get it every so often when
one of the applications of PC suite goes tits up.

This is a know problem with the E70 software updater that Nokia has just
released yesterday. It's likely that you'll have to bring your phone to a
service center as it's pretty much dead right now unless Nokia provides a
way for you to flash it back to the previous firmware version. You can
follow the progress on this issue on Nokia's forum (i've not read this
thread entirely so a solution might have already been found there):
<http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/discussions/board/message?board.id=swupdate&message.id=791&view=by_d ate_ascending&page=3>

In any case, i would *always* check the feedback of other users before
attempting a firmware ugrade, be it on your phone, wifi router or
microwave. When these things go wrong, all you're left with is an expensive
piece of plastic so better leave the others discover if there are any bugs
before taking the plunge (actually, i'd tend to be one of the early testers
but do what I say, not what I do).

Phone is now on its way back to Nokia, via a local service centre, at no
charge. I've been told to expect a 10-day turnaround. I've written to
Nokia and this was what they suggested, though interestingly, the update
is still available via www.nokia.co.uk/softwareupdate.

Try it again or take it to a service centre to be re-flashed.

An "official" statement from Nokia has been released yesterday regarding
this issue:

"Nokia is aware that some versions of Nokia E70 software have been
defective. The defective software has been removed from the Software Update
service. Nokia is working to resolve the issue and replace the software
packets as soon as possible. Any defected device can be fixed at any Nokia
Service Point free of charge - please visit www.europe.nokia.com/repair to
find your nearest service location. We apologize for any inconvenience this
has caused."

Typical Nokia - not only do they not get the software right on the
devices, they also cock up their own upgrade process!

Priceless!
