You only need the network connection if you want the phone to give you
verbal directions, you can use the map function to determine your location
(in conjunction with a GPS) and calculate routes for free.

Thanks for your quick response.
At this moment I can only zoom in to the UK, ie with the UK filling
the screen. If I zoom in further the screen just goes white. I did
check the Nokia site for downloads but the 6124 was not in the list of
models that they had nokia maps for. Is their another model that uses
the same maps as the 6124?

That's assuming you've already downloaded the maps with Nokia Map
Loader. If you haven't done that then the phone will try to set up a
network connection to download the portion of the map for the area you
are in.

I was assuming that Nokia Mpas would be very similar across all the Nokia
phones.
I actually have an E65, with most of the maps of Europe on a 2GB (so
called!) micro SD card, and an extermal Bluetooth iBlue GPS

Hi
I thought my 6124 will take a Bluetooth GPS receiver, but today, my
local vodafone shop manager told me that I would need to pay £5.00
per month otherwise it wouldn't work.
I don't know whether or not he meant only the one they had for sale or
all Bluetooth GPS receivers.

Hi Chris
I looked on the Nokia website, but in the map section they don't
mention which ones are for the 6124.

Well what is being said is that Vodafone charge for a facility that Nokia
supply for free!
I actually have an iBlue 737 which I bought from a UK ebay supplier for just
under £30 including about £10 postage.
My phone was bought 'Sim Free'. The Bluetooth connection is not perfect I
sometimes have to restart Nokia maps to get the connection to work.

I just looked at the specifications for the 6124, and I can't see any
reference to it having GPS capability. If that's correct, then how are
you planning to use it with Nokia Maps?

You don't need GPS to simply browse maps.
Anyhow, you can apparently buy a bluetooth GPS receiver for it.
The local Vodafone shop was prepared to sell me one, but the manager
insisted I needed to pay a monthly rental of £5.00 to use the service.
I am currently asking around to see if I can buy a cheaper receiver
that would be compatible with the 6124 classic.

What exactly was the £5 monthly charge for, and were you expected to
pay it to Vodafone for something, or to someone else?

The monthly charge is apparently for data usage. I think Vodafone are
saying that for my mobile to be connected to a bluetooth GPS receiver,
it, for some reason also needs to be connected to their network and
download data. I personally don't understand this.
I have UK Nokia maps installed in my 6124 and I can browse right down
to street name detail. So surely, if I added that device, it should
show current location and speed on my phone screen.

You can buy a bluetooth GPS gizmo for about 20 quid from ebay(or many other
places). Look for one with the SiRF III chipset that is (or was, when I
bought mine) the best.
You don't need any data access to use it (other than whatever the actual app
you are running on your phone requires, obviously).
